ASCP Membership Opens Doors to Advance Your Skills, Knowledge and Career

Becoming active with ASCP has opened doors for Julie Papango, MLS(ASCPi)CM, a clinical laboratory technologist II who works in the blood bank at Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York.

A few years ago, she was invited to present a talk at a healthcare convention in Colorado Springs, Colo., about her humanitarian aid work with the nonprofit organization, Doctors Without Borders.

Then ASCP President Melissa P. Upton, MD, FASCP -- the keynote speaker at the convention – heard her talk and approached her soon afterward. “She heard me talk about setting up labs in other countries and felt my background in global health would be very beneficial to ASCP’s outreach programs,” Ms. Papango recalls.

At Dr. Upton’s urging, she applied for ASCP’s 40 Under Forty recognition program that year. To her surprise and delight, she was selected as an honoree.

“That opened the door to meeting so many other people in the laboratory profession who are very well versed in their fields. I had the opportunity to talk with experts in blood banking. It was such a great opportunity,” Ms. Papango recalls.

From there, she discovered other opportunities for involvement in ASCP, where she continues to network with other professionals while taking advantage of the education ASCP is known for.
