ASCP CSTP Chair Joins National Testing Implementation Forum

August 28, 2020

ASCP Commission on Science, Technology and Public Policy Chair Gary Procop, MD, MS, MASCP, was recently selected for the National Testing Implementation Forum. The creation of the Forum was announced in July by Admiral Brett Giroir, MD, Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Dr. Procop joined the panel for its August 13 meeting. The meeting provides a venue for laboratory experts to share information and provide input to federal leaders about COVID-19, laboratory testing, and diagnostics.

In April, ASCP urged the creation of a National Testing Task Force, and the Testing Forum is the Administration’s response to ASCP’s advocacy recommendation. ASCP has also supported this call with an Action Alert that resulted in more than 10,000 letters to Congress, HHS, and Administration officials.

ASCP’s hope is that the forum will help refine federal, state and local efforts to respond effectively to the pandemic and to improve test capacity. The forum will facilitate a dialogue with HHS on how it can best identify and address end-to-end testing supply chain issues across commercial, public health, academic and other laboratories and to identify optimal testing strategies (diagnostic, screening, surveillance and others) in various settings.
