ASCP Joins AMA on Surprise Billing Letter

August 05, 2020

On July 27, ASCP joined with the American Medical Society and other medical specialty societies in raising concerns with Congress in a letter about passing surprise billing reform at this time. While ASCP agrees with the urgent need to hold patients harmless in billing disputes between providers and insurers, the Society is concerned that the current legislation being considered by Congress unfairly favors insurers in billing disputes. ASCP believes that indexing out-of-network payment rates to in-network payments forces providers to accept whatever rates insurers wish to provide. In addition, ASCP favors provisions that allow providers to seek baseball-style arbitration when payment rates for out-of-network payment are perceived as insufficient.
