Congress Should Enact Resident Physician Shortage Bill: ASCP

July 02, 2020

ASCP is calling on Congress to enact the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act. The Society and other members of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Coalition sent a letter, urging Congress to include provisions of this bill in the next COVID-19 supplemental spending bill. The measure would increase Medicare support for physician residency training through graduate medical education to address the impending national physician workforce shortage. Increasing federal support for educational programs benefiting pathology and laboratory medicine was one of the tenets adopted by ASCP in its call for a Nation COVID-19 Testing Strategy.
