ASCP Works to Expand Coronavirus Testing Authority
ASCP has been working to expand the network of clinical laboratories that can test for the novel Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-2019). During the course of ASCP’s advocacy on this issue, the Food and Drug Administration, in coordination with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, released policy, effective immediately, authorizing clinical laboratories outside the public health laboratory network to conduct testing for SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-2019.Read More

NSH Releases Histotechnology Workload Study
The National Society for Histotechnology has released the results of its recent histotechnology workload study, which examines workload, productivity and individual staffing decisions for a variety of personnel categories that perform histotechnology services.Read More

Legislation to Address Surprise Billing Progressing in Congress
With the 2020 elections on the horizon, Congress is continuing its efforts to enact legislation to address surprise billing. In February, two House Committees approved separate bills on this issue. The legislation includes provisions that ASCP supports, including an independent dispute resolution process, and no monetary arbitration threshold.Read More

ASCP Seeks Clarification on CLIA Personnel Standards
ASCP and the National Society for Histotechnology recently wrote the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services seeking clarification about the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988’s high complexity testing personnel requirements.Read More

CMS Responds to ASCP, AMA Concerns on Prior Authorization
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services responded to a letter from ASCP and the AMA raising concern that the Agency is overly focused on automation as a means to implement prior authorization policy changes. ASCP, the AMA, and other medical specialty groups wrote to CMS last fall about its plans for the Di Vinci Project, which the Agency is pushing as a means facilitate the electronic exchange of clinical data extracted from physician electronic health records.Read More
