AMA Endorses ASCP’s Call for a National Testing Strategy

April 27, 2020

The American Medical Association (AMA) today urged the Trump Administration to develop a National Strategy much like the one that ASCP recommended recently. In a letter to U.S. Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Admiral Brett Giroir, MD, the AMA called for a national strategy that encourages the federal government to exert stronger leadership to help clinical laboratories acquire testing components that are in short supply.

Many of the themes touched upon in the AMA letter parallel those outlined in ASCP’s recommendation for a national strategy, such as providing “greater clarity and transparency around existing testing capacity.” These include increasing communication between the federal government, states and laboratories; ensuring clinical laboratories are adequately resourced; and providing appropriate review and guidance on the use of serological testing.

The ASCP has been working with AMA's White House staff and is pleased to see AMA's call for more federal coordination.
