It’s Your Turn to Take a Bow. Apply Now for the ASCP 40 Under Forty Program!

March 09, 2020

A year ago, pathology resident Adam L. Booth, MD, received an email from a colleague, encouraging him to apply for the ASCP 40 Under Forty recognition program. He had considered it, but hadn’t decided if this year was the year. The friend’s email gave him the necessary nudge to apply.

To his amazement, Dr. Booth was not only selected as a ASCP 40 Under Forty honoree, but was also named one of the program’s Top Five. His recognition garnered him many accolades, from a write-up in his health system’s staff newsletter to an invitation to speak at the 32nd Congress of the European Society of Pathology in Scotland later this year.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized among so many outstanding individuals,” says Dr. Booth, who encourages others to apply for the ASCP 2020 40 Under Forty program by the April 10 deadline. “If someone recognizes you are doing great things in pathology and laboratory medicine urges you to apply, or if you are proud of your accomplishments, go for it!”

Each year, the ASCP 40 Under Forty program recognizes 40 pathologists, laboratory professionals and residents under the age of 40 for their achievements and leadership qualities that are making an impact on pathology and laboratory medicine.  It isn’t necessary to be a “rock star” whose research is known the world over in order to apply.

“From what I’ve seen over the past few years, the ASCP 40 Under Forty program has made an effort to be very inclusive at all career levels,” says Deanna C. Fang, MD, FASCP, a 2019 40 Under Forty Top Five honoree. “Past recipients have included trainees, fellows, medical technologists and quality compliance officers.”

Julie Papango, MLS(ASCPi)CM, another 2019 Top Five honoree, was especially touched that ASCP recognized her for her global humanitarian outreach work through another healthcare nonprofit. An immigrant from the Philippines, Ms. Papango is a medical technologist 2 at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY.

“When the recognition for 40 Under Forty recognition was announced, I told my supervisor,” she recalls. “They notified our hospital’s communication department which wrote an article about me. All of my Filipino colleagues were tagging me and congratulating me on social media. Others asked how to volunteer with the humanitarian organization. I was also given an opportunity to volunteer with ASCP’s new Diversity and Inclusion Committee. This experience has opened doors.”

Now, it’s your turn to apply! Individuals who are chosen as a 40 Under Forty honoree will receive numerous benefits, including:

  • Complimentary enrollment in ASCP's essential LMU Core Competencies
  • A professionally-crafted press release for employers and personal networks
  • Discounted registration to the cutting-edge ASCP 2020 Annual Meeting
  • A story featuring an individual biography in ASCP’s renowned Critical Values

The Top Five among the 40 Under Forty will be determined through a combination of public voting through social media platforms and committee selection. The selection will be representative of ASCP’s membership. The Top Five will be awarded:

  • Free registration to attend the ASCP Annual Meeting
  • $1,000 stipend toward airfare and lodging for the 2020 ASCP Annual Meeting
  • Recognition at the Annual Meeting.
