ASCP Supports Opioid Workforce Act

January 08, 2020

ASCP joined with other members of the Graduate Medical Education Coalition to provide support for the Opioid Workforce Act of 2019, which would provide Medicare support for an additional 1,000 graduate medical education (GME) positions over five years in hospitals that have, or are in the process of establishing, accredited residency programs in addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry or pain medicine. The letter notes that one of the factors affecting treatment of substance abuse treatment is a shortage of physicians trained in addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry or pain management. The legislation is intended to help address substance abuse issues by improving access to treatment.
