Updated Genomic Pathology/Oncology Curriculum Now Available

Publication Date: Nov 25, 2019

The emergence of genomic medicine well over a decade ago has revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of disease. In 2014, the Training Residents in Genomics (TRIG) Working Group released The Genomic Pathology Workshop Instructor Handbook and Toolkit. Using these materials, team-based learning workshops have been held at international pathology meetings and used locally at individual residency programs.

“Over the last five years, genomic medicine has continued to evolve,” explains Richard L. Haspel, MD, PhD, FASCP, Chair of the TRIG Working Group and Assistant Professor of Pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Harvard Medical School, in Boston. “With these changes in the field in mind, the TRIG Working Group has now developed a significantly revised Handbook and Toolkit.”

Updates include new cases, variants, websites and actual genomic testing reports. Links to Google forms are also provided that allow learners to more easily access exercise questions, online resources and record their answers and notes.

“This TRIG Working Group includes members representing major pathology and genetics professional organizations collaborating to produce the highest quality educational resource,” Dr. Haspel explains.

TRIG resources, including the updated Instructor Handbook and Toolkit, are available at http://pathologylearning.org/trig. Development of the TRIG materials was made possible through an  R25 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and educational-design support from ASCP.
