Infectious Disease Advisor (3/14, Basilio) reported a study found that “although the mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine shows initially strong vaccine effectiveness (VE) against symptomatic infection and hospitalization in infants and young children, insight into its long-term VE in pediatric populations requires further research.” The investigators said, “While the vaccine’s effectiveness was modest after the first dose, it increased after the second dose, which is aligned with previous studies in older age groups. ... The observed waning of protection after the first dose highlights the need for continued monitoring of vaccine effectiveness over time, especially as new variants of the virus emerge.” The findings were published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases.
