ASCP Statement Regarding Racism

Publication Date: Jun 2, 2020

On May 25, an unarmed Black American man was killed as a result of merciless police action during what otherwise appeared to be a nonviolent confrontation. The American Society for Clinical Pathology condemns any sort of brutality, discrimination, prejudice or hate crimes toward any individual.

Profiling any person related to his or her race, religion or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, exceptionalities, language or sexual orientation is incomprehensible within an intellectual and civilized society. Respect for others is a human right, and we will not tolerate differential treatment of any human, not their outside skin color nor their inside genetic makeup. This country is founded on the principles of freedom and an inalienable right that all people are created equal and should be treated as such.

ASCP, as the society representing pathologists and medical laboratory professionals, is dedicated to caring for patients’ health and lives. Diagnostics are at the center of what we do. We look at the root causes and underlying conditions affecting a patient’s health.

Racism, brutality and violence are health issues, and they have profound consequences on the everyday lives of our patients and our members. ASCP seeks to engage people of color and other underrepresented groups in designing, executing, and leading programs to serve all patients and all members of our profession.

The bottom line: If we do not speak out against systemic racism and discrimination, we are complicit in perpetuating it.
