Citation of Certifications

ASCP certification credentials are listed with the designation “(ASCP)” after the category initials for US certification and “(ASCPi)” after the category initials for International certification as follows:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCP)
  • International Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCPi)

Time-Limited Certifications

Individuals awarded a three year time-limited U.S. or International certification are required to participate in the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) to maintain a valid ASCP certification or their certification will expire. Once a certification has expired, these individuals are no longer permitted to use the ASCP credential after their name.

The initials “CM” in superscript follow (ASCP) and (ASCPi) for the credentials of individuals required to complete the CMP to maintain certification.

  • Mary Jones, MLS(ASCP)CM
  • Mary Jones MLS(ASCPi)CM

Time-Limited Qualifications

ASCP qualifications are time-limited and valid for a three-year period. Individuals are required to participate in the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) to maintain a valid qualification. If a qualification expires, these individuals are no longer permitted to the use the ASCP qualification credential after their name.

The initials “CM” in superscript follow the qualification credential as follows:

  • Mary Jones, QIHCCM

Two Certifications

  • The second certification category is listed immediately after (ASCP) or (ASCPi) with no comma or space
    • Susan Smith, MLS(ASCP)CMBB or Maria Sanchez, MLS(ASCPi)CMMBiCM
  • If one of the categories is MLS, it should always be listed before the (ASCP) or (ASCPi) as above regardless of chronology
  • Two categories in separate disciplines, where neither is MLS, are listed in chronological order based on the date received
    • Susan Smith, HTL(ASCP)SCT

Multiple Certifications in the Same Discipline

  • If multiple certifications are awarded in the same discipline, the lower level certification category should be omitted
    • Correct: Susan Smith, SBB(ASCP)
    • Incorrect: Susan Smith, BB(ASCP)SBB

Advanced Degree and a Certification

  • The advanced degree always precedes the certification(s)
    • Susan Smith, PhD, MLS(ASCP)CMMB

A U.S. & International Certification Together

  • If one of the certifications is a US (ASCP) certification and the other is an International (ASCPi) certification, the US certification should always be listed first regardless of category or chronology with a comma and space between them

Beware of Fraudulent Use of Credentials

For Certificants

The number of people misrepresenting their ASCP certification status has significantly increased over the years. To protect the integrity of your ASCP Board of Certification credential and records please pay attention to the following suggestions.

  • Do not loan your wall certificate to another individual.
  • If you have an ASCP Member ID card, do not share with anyone.
  • Do not post a copy of your wall certificate, score report or ASCP Member ID card on the Internet or social media.

Examples of Fraudulent Use

Individuals who have improperly obtained copies of wall certificates or ASCP Member ID cards are able to:

  • Change the name on the document to their own.
  • The copy is then used to obtain employment as an ASCP certified laboratory professional.
  • A certified individual may amend their certificate to reflect a higher level of certification.

For Employers

When hiring laboratory professionals, do not accept copies of wall certificates or ASCP Member ID cards. Certification should be verified through the ASCP online verification of certification process; the individual's certification category, certification number, and the valid date of certification will be provided.

MT to MLS Credential Transition

The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Board of Governors (BOG) created a Nomenclature Taskforce in November of 2021 to make recommendations for gaining acceptance and adoption of a unified title of Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).

This group was formed after the ASCP BOC and American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) published the position paper Standardizing the Professional Title of Medical Laboratory Professionals: A Position Paper of American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) and the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC).

The Nomenclature Taskforce and the BOC BOG agreed that one goal critical to standardization is to transition the BOC credentials, Medical Technologist, MT(ASCP)/MT(ASCPi) to Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCP)/MLS(ASCPi).

This means that anyone with an MT(ASCP) or MT(ASCPi) credential will be transitioned to MLS(ASCP) or MLS(ASCPi) by the end of 2022.

You may begin using the MLS(ASCP) or MLS(ASCPi) credential immediately. However, primary source verification of your ASCP certification will continue to show MT(ASCP) or MT(ASCPi) certification until the transition process is completed by the end of 2022.

Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCP)/MLS(ASCPi) is equivalent to Medical Technologist, MT(ASCP)/MT(ASCPi).

The Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) will continue to be voluntary for those individuals whose credential will be transitioning from MT to MLS as they were originally ASCP certified prior to 2004 and the required CMP.

Transition of Existing Molecular Pathology MP(ASCP) credential to Molecular Biology MB(ASCP)

The Technologist in Molecular Pathology, MP(ASCP) credential will be transitioned to Technologist in Molecular Biology, MB(ASCP) by the end of 2022. You may begin using the MB(ASCP) credential immediately. However, primary source verification of your ASCP certification will continue to show MP(ASCP) certification until the transition process is completed by the end of 2022.

Molecular Biologist, MB(ASCP) is equivalent to Molecular Pathologist, MP(ASCP).

Cytologist/Cytology Adopted as New Certifying Terminology

In October 2021, the ASCP BOG voted to approve the renaming of the CT/SCT credential titles. Cytotechnologist has been changed to “Cytologist” and Specialist in Cytotechnology has been changed to “Specialist in Cytology”.

In addition, the International Technologist in Gynecologic Cytology credential title, has been renamed “International Gynecologic Cytologist.”

This transition was finalized in early 2022 and is a title change only, the requirements for CT/SCT/CTgyn certification/recertification and credentials remain the same.

How to Place an Order
