There is no doubt about it -- the COVID-19 pandemic affected our lives. It has shifted the way we live, the way we work, and the way we lead. Amid this paradigm shift, it has become increasingly important for leaders to practice inclusive leadership. What does it mean to be an inclusive leader in a post-pandemic era? In this session, we will discuss the value of inclusive leadership and explore strategies to foster a more inclusive work environment for our teams.

Significant operational and financial benefits can be achieved using integrated laboratory information systems (LIS) and revenue cycle management (RCM) systems. Independently functioning LIS and an associated RCM system require manual entry or interfacing to capture charges associated with the clinical procedures. Often, there are inconsistencies between the LIS generated clinical procedures and what is processed by the RCM system resulting in rejected claims for reimbursement. By allowing "seamless" interchange of clinical and financial data and eliminating data “silos”, pathologists and laboratory managers can optimize and validate both the clinical data capture and financial reimbursement processes. This presentation will describe the characteristics of such an integrated system and contrast the differences between integrated vs. interfaced information systems. If available, case studies of an integrated LIS/RCM environment will be discussed with lessons learned and benefits derived.

This session will present the elements of empathy, discussing why it is important for individual leader’s success and how this approach can be used for problem solving. Small group discussions will focus on understanding the qualities and power of empathetic leadership, and the sharing of participant’s experiences. These discussions will emphasize examples of how to effectively lead and inspire others in the laboratory setting through developing more caring and compassionate relationships. Tools for developing habits of highly empathetic leadership will be detailed and elaborated upon in the small groups.

The session will present an overall review of errors in surgical pathology. It will consist of four main parts: theoretical background, practical examples, helpful and emerging technologies, and Q&A. 1. Theoretical background: Human factors and error will be defined as applicable to the surgical pathology environment. The presentation will be grounded on workplace variables, specimen lifecycle, and human factors. 2. Practical examples: Errors typical or illustrative of various phases of the specimen lifecycle will be discussed. An effort will be made to include examples applicable to diverse practices and laboratory sizes. 3. Helpful and emerging technologies: While not the session's main focus, there will be a brief review of some established and emerging technologies targeting error reduction in surgical pathology. 4. Q&A: Audience response/participation will be prompted at multiple points throughout the session. But time will be specifically dedicated to questions and answers at the end of the activity.

Safety starts at the beginning of the lifespan of a lab specimen. There is a general lack of knowledge about collection and transport safety as well as practices that are adjacent to this area- courier safety and specimen processing. Managers do not always understand when staff needs specific required DOT training when transporting Category A and B specimens. Only some of the regulations apply for laboratory materials of trade, but training often lacks inclusion of proper safety training that covers them.

The dominant model of laboratory testing globally remains the centralized laboratory in which most of the analytical processes are automated to enable the analysis of larger numbers of samples at relatively low cost. This model of laboratory testing has a disruptive influence on the physician-patient interaction. However, healthcare is changing towards a more patient-centered approach and there is a need to adapt to these changes. The session will address the transformation needs in POCT: where we were, what we have experienced, and the future perspective. Emerging technological innovations in POCT, such as AI, machine learning, biosensors, lab-on-a-chip, and wearable devices, bring testing closer to the patient and results quicker to the physician to expedite diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Point-of-care testing is rapidly becoming part of the transformation of the healthcare landscape.

In this session, we have developed a laboratory based mini-version of the Amazing Race, a widely known reality series where teams travel to different destinations to compete in a series of challenges, some mental and some physical, in order to move to the next location until arriving at the final destination. In this session, attendees will actively follow the teams and discuss the progress and critique decisions made by the teams; the five pre-selected teams will compete using the ASCP Negotiation and Advocacy Toolbox to solve challenges along the way. The first team to arrive will win!

Without realizing it, we are negotiating almost constantly in any human interaction we experience. That first or next job, negotiating through a behavioral based interview, negotiating salary, a more flexible work schedule, or a change in job responsibilities. It takes negotiation skills to present an innovative idea to your supervisor or be heard by the C-Suite. Virtually any relationship whether personal or professional has some degree of problem negotiation. How you approach these conversations and building your negotiation skills is paramount to your success and will be learned in this presentation.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how industries across the world do business. In healthcare, AI can provide augmentation to operational, internal, and external challenges that exist today by reducing stakeholder time and fine-tuning manual processes. The time for large-scale discussions on how clinical laboratories will validate and ethically apply AI within their institutions is now. This session will review core concepts of AI while also addressing the current regulatory framework.
