Coagulation and fibrinolysis testing is an important, frequently confounding discipline of laboratory medicine. In this session, participants will develop and strengthen their fundamental understanding of coagulation and fibrinolysis, and improve their skills in this discipline. Upon completion of the program, participants will be empowered to assess abnormalities in coagulation and fibrinolysis tests by utilizing an algorithmic approach.
We will begin with a brief overview of in-vivo coagulation and fibrinolysis pathways. We will then explore the laboratory tests utilized to evaluate coagulation and fibrinolysis. Test limitations will be assessed as they relate to in-vivo function, as well as pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical variables which may impact patient care. Working through case-based scenarios will reinforce all of the above.
This program will provide a coagulation and fibrinolysis problem-solving framework, and enable informed responses to inquiries arising from test abnormalities. The intended audience is generalist medical technologists in community settings, specialized technologists in academic settings, residents and fellows in clinical pathology disciplines, and clinical pathologists. Knowledge of the basic fundamentals of coagulation and fibrinolysis is assumed.
After attending this session, participants will be able to:
· Describe coagulation testing and its limitations, as well as the most common coagulation defects and their clinical context.
· Predict coagulation test results based on factor deficits, consumption, or inhibition.
· Identify the next best test based on abnormalities.
