It is well known that urinary cytology cannot reliably make the call of low grade urothelial neoplasia, but current understanding about low grade urothelial neoplasia indicates that it does not invade and is usually detectable by cystoscopy. On the other hand, high grade lesions are easily detectable by cytology, tend to invade, generate flat lesions that may not be found by cystoscopy, and evolves by different molecular pathways than low grade disease. The Paris System changes the paradigm of urothelial neoplasia by concentrating on the achievable goal of searching for high grade urothelial neoplasia. This session will review the history and central concepts of the Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology. Examples from the Paris System Atlas, the Paris Interobserver Reproducibility Study, and the Paris System website will be presented.
After attending this session, participants will be able to:
· Understand the rationale for the creation of the Paris System of Urinary Cytology.
· Appreciate that the central focus of the Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology is the identification of High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma.
· Be able to apply the Paris System Classification to their urinary cytology workload.
