Molecular Diagnostic Methods in Oncology: An Update on Practical Aspects That You Will Want to Know Before Transitioning into Practice

Molecular diagnostics increasingly impacts numerous areas of cancer care delivery including the diagnosis and prognosis for predicting response to particular therapies and in minimal residual disease monitoring. In the era of personalized medicine, it is important for the pathologist to understand the roles of molecular diagnostic tests and their potential integration with histopathology as part of diagnostic approach and clinical management. Equally important is an understanding of the technical, regulatory, and practical aspects associated with the function of a molecular diagnostics laboratory. While many pathology residents and community pathologists are exposed, at least to some extent to molecular diagnostic testing, there is significant room for advancement in the understanding and use of molecular diagnostics in oncologic pathology. This session will review the current and emerging molecular techniques for potential use in oncology testing, and will discuss indications, applications, limitations and implementation of molecular tests in this setting. The session will also discuss rules, regulations, and workflow that are inherent to the function of a clinical molecular diagnostic laboratory.
