Shannon-Miller

Featured speaker Shannon Miller is the most decorated Olympic gymnast in American history and a cancer survivor. She is the only female athlete to be inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame – twice — first as an individual (2006) and then as part of a team (2008). Shannon has won an astounding 59 International and 49 National competition medals, with over half of these resulting in gold medals. The only U.S. gymnast to win two World All-Around titles, she is also the first American female to medal in the individual all-around of a non-boycotted Olympics, and the most accomplished gymnast, male or female, in U.S. Olympic history. 

Shannon has made the transition from Olympic athlete to advocate for improving health care for women and children. With programs, partnerships, and articles, Shannon seeks to empower women to make their health a priority through education and awareness.

Featured Speaker Thomas J. Bollyky, author of the upcoming book, “Plagues and the Paradox of Progress: Why the World Is Getting Healthier in Worrisome Ways,” will explain how historic health achievements are remaking a world that is both worrisome and full of opportunities. At the meeting he’ll discuss in depth whether the peril or promise of that progress prevails depends on what we, as a society, do next.

Bollyky is recognized for his expertise in global health and development. In 2014, he directed the first CFR-sponsored Independent Task Force devoted to that discipline, entitled The Emerging Global Health Crisis: Noncommunicable Diseases in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. Prior to coming to CFR, Bollyky was a fellow at the Center for Global Development.

Meeting Hotels

There are four Baltimore hotels serving as official headquarters for the ASCP 2018 Annual Meeting. All are offering substantial special discounts for meeting attendees.

The main headquarters hotel is the Baltimore Hilton, a premier destination hotel in downtown Baltimore. The Baltimore Hilton occupies a central location with some rooms that look directly into Orioles Park at Camden Yards and is connected to the Baltimore Convention Center by an elevated walkway. It is recommended that ASCP pathologist and laboratory professional members book their stay at this hotel.

Visa Application Tips

  • Include a letter of invitation from the meeting organizer. See below for information about requesting an official letter of invitation for the ASCP 2018 Annual Meeting.
  • When possible, provide proof of professional scientific and/or educational status, society membership and/or meeting registration.
  • Visa applicants are expected to provide evidence that they intend to return to their country of residence. Therefore, applicants should provide proof of binding or sufficient ties to their home country or permanent residence abroad. Visa applications are more likely to be successful if done in the visitor's home country.
  • Applicants should present their entire trip itinerary, including travel to any countries other than the United States, at the time of their visa application.
  • All applicants must be able to qualify for a visa on their own merits under the requirements of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

International Invitation Letter 

ASCP offers an official letter of invitation for ASCP 2018 Annual Meeting attendees. The letter of invitation can be obtained on request from ASCP Customer Service at 800.267.2727. Present this letter of invitation from ASCP to the consular officer during the visa interview. The letter of invitation, though not required for the visa application and by no means guaranteeing admittance into the U.S., can assist as a supporting document and provide compelling evidence for immigration officials to consider. 

Please note that ASCP cannot intervene with either U.S. embassies abroad or with the U.S. State Department on behalf of any participant.
