Israel Davidsohn Award for Distinguished Service

The Israel Davidsohn Award for Distinguished Service recognizes that rare individual capable of making a significant impact within ASCP through a variety of roles. Established in 1989, this prestigious award serves as a tribute to past president Israel Davidsohn, MD, FASCP, whose contributions touched every aspect of ASCP.

Philip Levine Award for Outstanding Research

This award honors dedicated ASCP members who have made significant contributions to molecular pathology, immunohematology, and/or immunopathology. This award was established in 1969 to honor the late Phillip Levine, MD, FASCP, who made many contributions to pathology, including determining the etiology of Rh hemolytic disease of newborns.

Ward Burdick Award for Distinguished Service to Pathology 

The Ward Burdick Award for Distinguished Service to Pathology recognizes noteworthy contributions to pathology through sustained service to the profession and ASCP. This prestigious award was established in 1929 to honor Ward Burdick, MD, FASCP, one of the original founders of the ASCP.

ASCP Mastership

The ASCP Mastership designation recognizes distinguished members (both pathologists and laboratory professionals) who have made significant contributions to the field of pathology and laboratory medicine and to ASCP. This exclusive title is accorded to an elite few and is recognized as a noteworthy sign of distinction in the pathology and laboratory fields.

Individuals awarded the Master distinction will be able to use the credentials “MASCP” after their name. This credential would replace the distinction FASCP, and appear before any Board of Certification designations, such as MASCP, MLS(ASCP)CM.

Eligibility is based on years of ASCP membership, significant career accomplishments, and contributions to the Society and to the profession. 

  • An individual must have been a Fellow or Member in good standing for at least 10 years.
  • Current members of the ASCP Board of Directors, Board of Certification Board of Governors, and/or members of the ASCP Awards Committee are not eligible for this nomination.
  • Individuals may not self-nominate nor be involved in the nomination process.

Student Awards

ASCP Medical Student Award

The ASCP Medical Student Award honors medical students who have achieved academic excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, and shown a strong interest in the pathology profession. Ten medical students will be selected to receive this prestigious award. One student will be chosen to receive the Gold Award. 

Award Overview

Ten awardees will receive:

  • A personalized certificate.
  • $100 Visa Gift Card.
  • Recognition on the ASCP website and in an ASCP publication or newsletter.
  • A copy of Quick Compendium of Clinical Pathology, 4th Edition

The Gold Award recipient will also be formally recognized at the ASCP Annual Meeting.

ASCP Laboratory Science Student Award

ASCP is committed to advancing laboratory medicine by recognizing future leaders in the profession. If your students have demonstrated academic excellence, community service and leadership, nominate them for an ASCP Laboratory Student Award. Program directors or instructors may nominate multiple students for this award. Up to ten laboratory science students will be selected to receive this prestigious honor.

Eligibility

Student nominees must:

  • Be a current Laboratory Student Member of ASCP. 
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Demonstrate leadership and community service activities.
  • Be one of the following:
    • In the final clinical year of an accredited MLS/MT, MLT, PA, CT, HTL, MB, or CG program;
    • Completing a clinical internship for an accredited MLS/MT or CT program;
    • Enrolled in an accredited hospital based MLS/MT program; or
    • Enrolled in an accredited PBT or HT program.

Award Overview

Ten awardees will receive:

  • A personalized certificate
  • A BOC Study Guide book of their choice

STEM Student Scholarship

ASCP recognizes the potential of high school students interested in pursuing degrees in the medical sciences with the STEM Student Scholarship. In conjunction with the NEXTPO event at the Annual Meeting, young learners become familiar with rewarding careers in the laboratory.

 

What Is the STEM Student Scholarship?

The STEM Student Scholarship was created to support exemplary students ready to pursue degrees or studies in the medical field or life sciences. It encourages young learners to hone their talents in the laboratory by finding a promising career as a pathologist, laboratory professional, scientist or researcher.

Student Award Eligibility

Local high school students invited to attend the NEXTPO event at the ASCP Annual Meeting are eligible for this scholarship. The ASCP Scholarship Committee carefully reviews each application and selects the scholarship recipients. The recipients are formally recognized at the NEXTPO event at the ASCP Annual Meeting.

Dr. Philip and Sandra Barney Resident Volunteer Service Award

The Dr. Philip and Sandra Barney Resident Volunteer Service Award recognizes an ASCP resident member with outstanding ASCP volunteer experience. This award began in 2023 through the generous donation of ASCP Past President Dr. Philip Barney and Sandra Barney to the ASCP Foundation.

  • Award $500 to the recipient

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

ASCP Diversity Equity, and Inclusion Award

The ASCP Diversity and Inclusion Award has been established by the ASCP Diversity and Inclusion Committee Awareness Workgroup. Each year, ASCP will recognize one member who has made significant strides to promote the ideals of diversity, inclusion, and equity.

For consideration, nominees should exemplify excellence in diversity and inclusion including, but not limited to:

  • Lead efforts directed in recruitment, retention, and education of diverse membership and/or work staff.
  • Mentor membership and coworkers from underrepresented groups and providing such mentoring opportunities for others in the workplace and/or community
  • Educates membership and/or coworkers on matters of inclusion and diversity through orientations, trainings, professional development, speaker engagements, conferences, and seminars
  • Participates in research initiatives that focus on and expands upon diversity, inclusivity, and equity
  • Develop programs aimed at tolerance and inclusivity while eliminating discrimination, inequalities, biases, exclusion, and unacceptable/offensive behaviors based on race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability, socioeconomic background, and religious beliefs
