2022 40 Under Forty Honorees

The ASCP 40 Under Forty program recognizes members under the age of 40 for their achievements and leadership qualities that are making an impact on pathology and laboratory medicine. Forty pathologists, laboratory professionals, and residents are chosen annually through an application or nomination process. The program has recognized worthy members of the laboratory team both nationally and internationally. From the 40 Under Forty honorees, five individuals are selected as the 40 Under Forty Top Five through a combination of public voting and committee selection. Meet the 2022 honorees below. Tiffany Gill, MA, MLS(ASCP)CM

Tiffany Gill, MA, MLS(ASCP)CM, is a tenured professor and coordinator of the Medical Laboratory Technology program at the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata, MD. She received a bachelor’s degree in Biology-Chemistry from Immaculata University, in Immaculata, Pennsylvania, and completed the Medical Laboratory Science program at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, D.C. In addition, she earned a master’s degree in Teaching and Learning with Technology from Ashford University, in Clinton, IA. Professor Gill teaches immunohematology, microbiology, biochemistry, and mycology, parasitology, and virology while maintaining NAACLS program continuous accreditation status. Through ASCP, she volunteers as a mentor, Career Ambassador, Social Media Committee member, and an ASCP Board of Certification Hematology Exam Committee member. Ms. Gill founded the “Medical Lab Lady Gill” YouTube channel, offering virtual learning experiences for medical laboratory science students, current professionals, and promotional material for the laboratory profession. She partnered with the ASCP Council of Laboratory Professionals to create the National Hematology Cell Bowl competition where students in 71 MLT and MLS educational programs competed to correctly identify 30 blood cells in 60 seconds.

Catherine Stefaniuk, DO, FASCP

Catherine M. Stefaniuk, DO, FASCP, is an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati and is board-certified in anatomic, clinical, and molecular genetic pathology. She completed her pathology residency at the Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and her molecular genetic pathology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology at Pennsylvania State University and completed medical school at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. At the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Stefaniuk serves as the director of several clinical laboratory departments including coagulation, immunology, urinalysis, and hematology. Also, she is the director of the Diagnostic Laboratory Medicine (DLM) rotation where she has worked to create an integrative clinical pathology rotation for residents. She has worked to improve patient care in the lab through effective test utilization. Dr. Stefaniuk has also worked with hematologists and laboratory and IT staff to provide rapid hemoglobin test results to improve blood utilization for red blood cell exchanges. Currently, she is working with a diverse group of physicians to improve pre-surgical anemia diagnosis to help alleviate the need for post-surgical blood transfusions.

Alison Krywanczyk, MD, FASCP

Alison Krywanczyk, MD, FASCP, is a forensic and cardiovascular pathologist at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office (CCMEO) in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Krywanczyk received her MD from the University of Vermont Medical School before completing pathology residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She then completed fellowships in forensic pathology and cardiovascular pathology at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Cleveland Clinic, respectively, before taking a position as autopsy and cardiovascular pathologist at the Cleveland Clinic and working part time at the CCMEO. This summer, she transitioned to a full-time position as associate medical examiner at the CCMEO. She is board-certified in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology. Dr. Krywanczyk hopes to increase interest in dual training in forensic and cardiovascular pathology, and to improve interdisciplinary collaboration between pathologists, cardiologists, and genetic counselors. She is particularly interested in studying sudden cardiac death, cardiomyopathies, channelopathies, and connective tissue diseases.

Letycia Nuñez-Argote, PhD, MPH, MLS(ASCP)CM

Letycia Nuñez-Argote, PhD, MPH, MLS(ASCP)CM, is clinical assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. She teaches undergraduate and graduate level laboratory science courses and conducts health systems research, applying models of occupational health to data and experiences of laboratory workers. She earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master’s degree in public health from the School of Public Health of Mexico, and a PhD in health policy and management from the University of Kansas. Dr. Nuñez Argote’s professional goals are to develop content, scholarship, and relationships with current and future laboratory professionals, and to study and develop strategies to encourage a healthy and productive laboratory workforce. She is actively engaged with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives through her work, as well as professional and community-based organizations. She believes that a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive workforce is necessary to transform laboratory practice and move the scientific and the human sides of our profession forward.

S. Cristian Lozano, DCLS, MLS(ASCP)CM

S. Cristian Lozano, DCLS, MLS(ASCP)CM, is a medical laboratory scientist in Kansas City, MO. He completed his Doctor of Clinical Laboratory Science (DCLS) residency at the Kansas City VA Medical Center, in Kansas City, and his DCLS training at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He also received a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory sciences from the University of Kansas. An active member of ASCP, Dr. Lozano serves on the Council of Laboratory Professionals and the Social Media Committee, and as a Career Ambassador. He is a contributor to the DCLS Body of Knowledge and actively participates in DCLS oversight activities. Dr. Lozano enjoys serving as a mentor, increasing the visibility of clinical laboratory scientists as key contributors of diagnostic data and laboratory stewardship, enforcing the importance of interprofessional collaborative practices, and focusing on antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.

Paolo Miguel Ata, MBA, MLS(ASCPi)CM

Paolo Miguel Ata, MBA, MLS(ASCPi)CM, is a quality coordinator for the laboratory at Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ, as well as an adjunct professor for the medical laboratory technologist program at Mercer County Community College in New Jersey. Mr. Ata was introduced to the laboratory profession while serving as a medical laboratory specialist in the US Army. He completed his MBA in healthcare management at Western Governors University. Mr. Ata earned a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Centro Escolar University in the Philippines. He also holds an associate degree in science from George Washington University, with a certificate in health science clinical laboratory technology. In his current role in the laboratory, he enjoys the opportunity to improve best practices, update policies and procedures to current accreditation standards, be involved in method performance verifications, and monitor quality indicators for process improvement.

Tejus Bale, MD, PhD, FASCP

Tejus A. Bale, MD, PhD, FASCP, is a board-certified anatomic pathologist, neuropathologist, and molecular genetic pathologist. A native New Yorker, she studied biochemistry and dance as an undergraduate at State University of New York, Stony Brook before going on to earn her MD and PhD at the School of Medicine. She completed a residency in anatomic pathology and a fellowship in neuropathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, followed by a second fellowship in molecular genetic pathology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bale is an assistant attending in both neuropathology and diagnostic molecular pathology services at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) in New York, where she is working to lead, develop, and improve integrative diagnostic activities as a liaison between two pathology subspecialties. As Director of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Advocacy in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at MSK, she is working to design and implement strategies to increase diversity, ensure equity, and encourage dialogue to understand and combat discrimination and injustice.

Kjerstin Buboltz, PA(ASCP)CM

Kjerstin Buboltz, PA(ASCP)CM, is a pathologists’ assistant (PA) at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND. She completed her PA degree at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and earned bachelor’s degrees in cytotechnology and honors at the University of North Dakota. Ms. Buboltz is an active member of ASCP and serves as vice chair of the ASCP Board of Certification’s Pathologists’ Assistant Exam Committee. She is also a fellow of the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA) and is both chair and speaker recruiter for the AAPA Summer Conference.

Ms. Buboltz enjoys the many benefits of volunteering with ASCP and AAPA, including networking with pathologists, PAs, and other medical professionals, and learning about the latest advancements in the laboratory. When she is not working or volunteering, she enjoys planning future trips with her husband, reading about archaeology and history, and helping on the family farm.

Sarah Buckmiller, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM

Sarah Buckmiller, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM, is the Director of Laboratory Services at Saint Luke’s Health System in Kansas City, MO. She oversees laboratory services for the system’s 16 hospitals and more than 90 physician clinics. She earned a bachelor of science in biology at Creighton University, Omaha, NE, and a master of science in clinical practice management from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Ms. Buckmiller is a graduate of North Kansas City’s School of Medical Laboratory Science and holds a certified Six Sigma Green Belt. Fascinated by laboratory science at an early age, she followed her mother’s footsteps to become a medical laboratory scientist and a leader in the laboratory profession. She is passionate about laboratory education and recruitment and stays involved in the 89-year-old MLS Program at Saint Luke’s. When not working, she loves staying active, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.

Yasmeen Butt, MD, FASCP

Yasmeen M. Butt, MD, FASCP, is an assistant professor at Mayo Clinica Arizona. She is board-certified in anatomic pathology and practices both thoracic and general pathology and is part of a busy pulmonary pathology consultation practice. Dr. Butt has published numerous papers in the field of pulmonary pathology, including a New England Journal of Medicine article describing the histologic findings in patients with vaping associated lung injury. She is the first author of the recently published textbook, Atlas of Pulmonary Pathology: A Pattern-Based Approach, and is passionate about education. Dr. Butt is a member of ASCP’s AP CheckPath Committee. She is also an officer for the Arizona Society of Pathologists. Dr. Butt is the faculty advisor for her medical school’s Pathology Interest Group and strives to showcase the value of pathology to medicine and as a career. Kum Lam Chan, MLS(ASCP)CM

Kum Lam Chan, MLS(ASCP)CM, earned a bachelor's degree in medical technology from Universidad de Oriente in Venezuela and received training in clinical biochemistry at the Ramon y Cajal Hospital in Madrid, Spain. Mr. Chan moved to the United States in 2011 and was certified by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) a year later. He’s been active in ASCP almost since his arrival in the U.S. In 2019, Mr. Chan completed a master’s degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Central Florida to specialize in infectious diseases and molecular biology. He worked at one of the largest reference laboratories in the United States and in several academically affiliated hospital laboratories. He currently works for Atrium Navicent Health in Georgia and is dedicated to training laboratory professionals from different institutions, while also delivering laboratory results, QC data analysis, and other functions. Mr. Chan is an active ASCP volunteer and has collaborated in translating the ASCP BOC Study Guide into Spanish. He also has translated ASCP BOC materials for use in Latin America. He is passionate about the laboratory and finds satisfaction in providing accurate diagnoses and support to patients behind the scenes.

Bonnie Choy, MD, FASCP

Bonnie Choy, MD, FASCP, is an assistant professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, in Chicago, IL. She earned an undergraduate degree from Cornell University and a medical degree from the University of Rochester, where she discovered her passion for pathology during her post-sophomore fellowship year with the Department of Pathology. She completed residency in anatomic and clinical pathology and served as chief resident at the University of Chicago, followed by fellowships in surgical pathology at the University of Chicago and cytopathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston.

Dr. Choy is the associate program director for the Pathology Residency and Cytopathology Fellowship at Northwestern. She is also actively involved in medical school education, where she has been elected to the Northwestern University Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators. She is the director of the Fine Needle Aspiration Service in the Division of Cytopathology.

Dr. Choy has written several published articles and book chapters and serves on the editorial advisory board for the Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology and the editorial board for PathologyOutlines.com.

Katrina Collins, MD, FASCP

Katrina Collins, MD, FASCP, is an assistant professor of clinical pathology and laboratory medicine at Indiana University, in Indianapolis, IN, and is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. She received training in both anatomic and clinical pathology at Hartford Hospital, and additional fellowship training in hematopathology at Hartford Hospital, surgical pathology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and genitourinary pathology at Indiana University. Dr. Collins serves on the board of the Indiana Association of Pathologists, where she is also social media editor. She is active in numerous medical societies, including the American Society for Clinical Pathology, College of American Pathologists, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, International Society of Urological Pathology and Genitourinary Pathology Society. Dr. Collins serves on a steering biorepository committee to link clinical care programs. She is also interested in digital pathology and raises the profile of pathology using her social media platforms to integrate multiple diagnostic tools in medicine including radiology, genetics, and other forms of clinical pathology.

Saswati Das, MBBS, MD, FASCP, PGDHHM, IFCAP, FACSc, FAACC, is an assistant professor and specialist of biochemistry (chemical pathology) at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Central Health Service, New Delhi, where she oversees a broad portfolio of chemical pathology diagnostics, molecular medicine, and quality management. She led the hospital’s COVID-19 response efforts by advocating for the development of an evidence-informed testing strategy, participating in webinars as a subject matter expert, and building capacity by training laboratory personnel.

Dr. Das earned a bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery and a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Delhi. She trained at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York, NY, and was an international fellow at Royal Free Hospital, NHS UK. She currently serves as an ASCP Career Ambassador 2.0. Siba El Hussein, MD, FASCP, is an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY. She is board-certified in anatomic and clinical and pathology, in addition to cytopathology and hematopathology. Dr. El Hussein completed her pathology residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center, in Miami, her cytopathology fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, and a hematopathology fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. Dr. El Hussein is passionate about promoting the specialty of pathology across social media platforms through daily educational content. In addition, she has a keen interest in integrating artificial intelligence into the pathology workflow (particularly in hematopathology). This interest has resulted in the conception of multiple artificial intelligence-based models that are aimed to help refine pathologists’ diagnosis in challenging lymphomas.

Lauren Frady, MS, MB(ASCP)CM, is a lead scientist on the Assay Development team at Q2 Solutions, a clinical trial laboratory services organization in Durham, NC. She currently serves as a subject matter expert on Ion Torrent NGS technologies, and has also contributed to the development, optimization, and validation of assays across a variety of platforms. Ms. Frady earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in molecular diagnostic science from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her role as an Assay Development scientist, she has tackled projects for her company’s clinical partners, and contributed to the development and launch of new service offerings, primarily expanding Q2 Solutions’ Immunology and Oncology portfolios using targeted NGS panels. Recently, she led the global launch of the Oncomine Precision Assay on Genexus Integrated Sequencer at her company’s international genomics laboratories and shared findings on the panel’s performance at the AACR Annual Meeting in April 2022 with two poster presentations. Ms. Frady has a strong commitment to providing quality results for clinical trial participants, as well as evaluating new technologies and mentoring junior scientists. In 2019, she was named the Q2 Solutions Laboratorian of the Year.

Amira Said Fyala, MSc, PhD, MLS(ASCPi)CM, is a consultant of medical analysis, a senior researcher in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and a postdoctoral candidate at the Cancer Stem Cells and Molecular Oncology Research Institute at Alexandria University, in Egypt.

She is interested in stem cell research and cancer molecular therapeutics and has conducted research on gene manipulation of cancer stem cells and molecular therapeutics in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Her findings have been published in journals of ASCP and the American Association for Cancer Research. In 2019, Dr. Fyala received the ASCP Best International Scientific Poster Award for her research.

In 2020, Dr. Fyala received the ASCP Member Excellence in Management Award, which recognizes distinguished laboratory professionals for effective leadership and management strategies in laboratory operations.

She holds a certification in Business Administration, Leadership, and Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the American University in Cairo. In 2017, she was selected as a “Women Entrepreneur from the World Business Fitness” program by the Industrial Training Council and Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Heather Gaburo, MHS, PA(ASCP)CM, is a pathologists' assistant based in South Lake Tahoe, CA, and is also the technical director for the Panel of National Pathology Leaders. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and a master of health science degree as a pathologists’ assistant from Quinnipiac University, in Hamden, CT. Ms. Gaburo is a fellow of the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA), where she serves on the Board of Trustees, as the AAPA's American Joint Committee on Cancer member liaison, and as the Molecular Division Managing Editor of the AAPA Macroscopic Examination Guidelines: Utilization of the CAP Cancer Protocols. In her current role, Ms. Gaburo guides national focus groups in digital pathology and artificial intelligence and diagnostic medicine, as well as a pathologists’ assistant networking team. Her interests include national standardization to improve quality of care, and utilization of tools including informatics, digital pathology, and artificial intelligence to provide quality pathology services and patient care to underserved areas.

Tiffany Gill, MA, MLS(ASCP)CM, is a tenured professor and coordinator of the Medical Laboratory Technology program at the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata, MD. She received a bachelor’s degree in Biology-Chemistry from Immaculata University, in Immaculata, Pennsylvania, and completed the Medical Laboratory Science program at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, D.C. In addition, she earned a master’s degree in Teaching and Learning with Technology from Ashford University, in Clinton, IA. Professor Gill teaches immunohematology, microbiology, biochemistry, and mycology, parasitology, and virology while maintaining NAACLS program continuous accreditation status. Through ASCP, she volunteers as a mentor, Career Ambassador, Social Media Committee member, and an ASCP Board of Certification Hematology Exam Committee member. Ms. Gill founded the “Medical Lab Lady Gill” YouTube channel, offering virtual learning experiences for medical laboratory science students, current professionals, and promotional material for the laboratory profession. She partnered with the ASCP Council of Laboratory Professionals to create the National Hematology Cell Bowl competition where students in 71 MLT and MLS educational programs competed to correctly identify 30 blood cells in 60 seconds.

Amit Gokhale, MD, FASCP

Amit Gokhale, MD, FASCP, is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, as well as transfusion medicine. He completed his pathology residency training in Saint Barnabas Medical Center and fellowship training in transfusion medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, where he won the teaching award for Outstanding Education Practice. His clinical interests include hemovigilance, coagulation disorders, and hemotherapy. He has a strong interest in blood management and quality improvement projects related to blood utilization. He has been a co-investigator in three national clinical trials, co-author of multiple textbook chapters, and has peer reviewed publications related to transfusion reactions. Dr. Gokhale is involved in numerous national organizations including the ASCP RISE Committee, Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists’ Education Committee Chair, and the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies’ eLearning Committee. Rotimi Johnson Ibidun, MLS(ASCP)CM, is a clinical laboratory scientist in the Molecular Microbiology Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, where he performs diagnostic assays, trains staff members, and is involved in validating new testing procedures. Mr. Ibidun earned a bachelor’s degree in medical research and technology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, in Baltimore. He began his career as a Medical Lab Technician after earning an associate degree at the Federal College of Veterinary and Medical Laboratory Sciences Vom in Jos, Nigeria. He earned a bachelor’s degree in pure and industrial chemistry at the University of Jos. He spent more than a decade in West Africa working in an HIV/AIDS-focused, non-profit hospital, the Faith Alive Foundation in a resource-limited setting. One of his major accomplishments has been leading the establishment of a specialty laboratory, expanding the scope of service for that region. He is proud that, as an immigrant, he has been able to pursue a medical laboratory career and work in a hospital that has been at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic. He plans to pursue post-graduate school and continues to support his hometown hospital’s ongoing projects as a board member of a Baltimore-based Hope for West Africa Foundation.

Jalal B. Jalaly, MD, MS, FASCP, is an assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified in anatomic, clinical, and cytopathology. Dr. Jalaly directs the school’s cytopathology fellowship program and is interested in head and neck and endocrine pathology. He completed his pathology residency at Washington University, in St. Louis, MO, followed by a surgical pathology fellowship. He then completed a cytopathology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Jalaly is a fellow of ASCP, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC), and is an active member in the Progressive Evaluation of Competency ASC Committee. He is dedicated to pathology education and directs the endocrine pathology course for the Perelman School of Medicine. Rajeswari Jayakumar, MBBS, FASCP, is a board certified anatomic and clinical pathologist, as well as a hematopathologist currently working as an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. She completed her anatomic and clinical pathology residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, NY, and her hematopathology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, in Maryland. Dr. Jayakumar is passionate about hematopathology and teaching. She mentors pathology residents and fellows and has a special interest in flow cytometry. She led a free Ace My Path: Flow Cytometry Course (available on Youtube) covering a spectrum of cases for trainees and practicing hematopathologists. Terri E. Abigail Jopling, MLS(ASCP)CM, is the laboratory manager at Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA. She completed her biochemistry undergraduate degree at University of California, Riverside, and her clinical laboratory science degree at Loma Linda University. Ms. Jopling currently manages a hospital laboratory, is a member of the VA’s Leadership Development Institute FY2022 class, and participates in numerous multidisciplinary committees. She is a coin recipient from the Secretary of the Veteran’s Administration and House Chairman for Veteran’s Affairs for her efforts during the pandemic to keep laboratory operations afloat. Ms. Jopling is passionate about taking an interdisciplinary, high reliability approach to improving care delivery and advocates for a transparent, informatics approach to accountability. Her interdisciplinary partnerships have resulted in a 47-percent decrease in time spent notifying providers of critical values by optimizing existing software usage and improving EHR documentation. Clarissa Jordan, MD

Clarissa E. Jordan, MD, is an anatomic and clinical pathology resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She will be completing a hematopathology fellowship at Mayo Clinic starting in 2024, and is interested in informatics and molecular genetic pathology. Dr. Jordan received a bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics from the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Baylor University, and is a graduate of Baylor College of Medicine. A resident member of ASCP, she has a passion for medical student and resident education, as well as pathology pipeline mentorship efforts. Dr. Jordan is active on social media @pathcejmd, where she posts pathology “tweetorials” (i.e., Twitter tutorials) about interesting and educational cases, and writes about the pathology residency application process and the couples match for Inside the Match and Match to Path (medical student mentorship organizations). Alison Krywanczyk, MD, FASCP

Alison Krywanczyk, MD, FASCP, is a forensic and cardiovascular pathologist at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office (CCMEO) in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Krywanczyk received her MD from the University of Vermont Medical School before completing pathology residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She then completed fellowships in forensic pathology and cardiovascular pathology at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Cleveland Clinic, respectively, before taking a position as autopsy and cardiovascular pathologist at the Cleveland Clinic and working part time at the CCMEO. This summer, she transitioned to a full-time position as associate medical examiner at the CCMEO. She is board-certified in anatomic, clinical, and forensic pathology. Dr. Krywanczyk hopes to increase interest in dual training in forensic and cardiovascular pathology, and to improve interdisciplinary collaboration between pathologists, cardiologists, and genetic counselors. She is particularly interested in studying sudden cardiac death, cardiomyopathies, channelopathies, and connective tissue diseases.

Jeffrey Kubiak, MD, PhD, FASCP

Jeffrey Kubiak, MD, PhD, recently completed his clinical pathology residency in New York City at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and is starting as a medical microbiology fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Kubiak graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and completed his MD/PhD at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing his PhD research on microbiology, virology, and parasitology. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Kubiak utilized his infectious disease research background and position as a resident laboratory clinician to generate large amounts of data for research using existing patient samples and technologies available to him in the clinical laboratory. He focused his research on utilizing SARS-CoV-2 serologic assays to study the placental transfer of protective SARS-CoV-2 antibodies from pregnant women to their neonates. Dr. Kubiak also has an academic interest in the detection and surveillance of antibiotic resistant bacteria, especially in immunocompromised populations.

Sean Moynihan, MS, HTL(ASCP)CMQIHCCM, is a technical and systems specialist at MGPO Dermatopathology Associates in Newton, MA. He received a bachelor's degree in biology from Salem State University, and a master's degree in biotechnology from Northeastern University, in Boston, MA. Prior to earning his degrees, he was a member of the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment in the U.S. Army. Currently, Mr. Moynihan serves on the Finance Committee for the National Society of Histotechnology. He also works with American Corporate Partners, mentoring veterans and their families as they transition from the military into civilian careers. Mr. Moynihan was also a member of the 2021 cohort of the 'Boston's Future Leaders Program', run through the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Harvard Business School. In addition to optimizing and validating all immunohistochemical assays used at Dermatopathology Associates, Mr. Moynihan is responsible for process improvement and the conceptualization and development of innovations designed to facilitate this. He believes that medical organizations have a responsibility to the public to identify and address operational inefficiencies in order to reduce unnecessary waste and mitigate the rising cost of healthcare.

Letycia Nuñez-Argote, PhD, MPH, MLS(ASCP)CM, is clinical assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. She teaches undergraduate and graduate level laboratory science courses and conducts health systems research, applying models of occupational health to data and experiences of laboratory workers. She earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master’s degree in public health from the School of Public Health of Mexico, and a PhD in health policy and management from the University of Kansas. Dr. Nuñez Argote’s professional goals are to develop content, scholarship, and relationships with current and future laboratory professionals, and to study and develop strategies to encourage a healthy and productive laboratory workforce. She is actively engaged with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives through her work, as well as professional and community-based organizations. Igor Odintsov, MD, FASCP

Igor Odintsov, MD, is a resident in the Department of Pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, MA. He completed his medical studies at the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. During that time, he discovered his passion for molecular pathology through a laboratory course that evolved into a three-year research internship. After medical school, Dr. Odintsov completed a post-doctorate fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in New York City, working on drug development and cancer biology in Dr. Marc Ladanyi’s laboratory. His work helped bring novel therapeutics to the clinical trial stage investigation, including an anti-HER3 antibody seribantumab and a RET-specific tyrosine kinase inhibitor vepafestinib. Dr. Odintsov is currently completing his training in anatomic pathology, with an interest in thoracic pathology and molecular pathology. He is passionate about the evolving role of pathology in precision medicine and clinical oncology and believes that the role of a pathologist in clinical care will only increase with growing complexity of biology-driven management.  Outside of his academic accomplishments, Dr. Odintsov advocates for international medical graduates and equitable access to medical training. Lateef Odukoya, MBBS, MPhil, FMCPath, is a lecturer and pathologist at the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University and the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu, Ogun State Nigeria. He completed his residency in anatomic pathology at Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, and qualified as a fellow of the Faculty of Pathology of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He completed a research fellowship in the Division of Neuro-oncology at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, AZ, and his undergraduate education at the Lagos State University College of Medicine Lagos, Nigeria. He earned an MPhil in cancer science, cum laude, in 2020 from Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Cape Town, South Africa. He is a Fellow of the International Cancer Control and served as assistant secretary of the Lagos State Division of the College of Nigerian Pathologists from 2017 to 2021. Dr. Odukoya is active in community health education and mentors younger colleagues. He is interested in cancer research and central nervous tumor diagnosis. His current research focuses on molecular characteristics of brain tumors.

Lauren Parsons, MD, FASCP, is an associate professor of pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW)/Children’s Wisconsin (CW). She completed medical school, residency, and two fellowships at MCW, and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, as well as pediatric pathology and cytopathology. She is the director of pediatric cytopathology and the interim medical director of histology at CW. Dr. Parsons started the Pediatric FNA Service at CW and founded and leads the Interdisciplinary Thyroid Group that provides comprehensive care for children with thyroid nodules and cancer. She is the director of the AP/CP Pathology Residency Program at MCW, director of the Pediatric Pathology Fellowship at CW/MCW, and runs the pediatric pathology live and virtual medical student electives. She is a central pathology reviewer on the Children’s Oncology Group Renal Tumor Committee and is the Chair of the Education Committee for the Society for Pediatric Pathology. Dr. Parsons’s clinical and research interests include novel applications of FNA in the care of children with cancer, the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric thyroid carcinoma, and further development of new treatment protocols for patients with Wilms tumor.

Leah Roberts, MPH, MB(ASCP)CM

Leah G. Roberts, MPH, MB(ASCP)CM, is the Chief Operating Officer for Ipsum Diagnostics LLC in Atlanta, GA. A board-certified molecular biologist, she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wesleyan College in Macon, GA, and a Master’s in Public Health from Walden University, in Minneapolis, MN. She is a certified Lean Six-Sigma green belt. Ms. Roberts oversees Ipsum Diagnostics’ clinical testing and workflow, research and development efforts, and filing of critical state and federal regulatory applications.

Ms. Roberts joined Ipsum in December 2019 as a molecular biologist just as COVID-19 was emerging. Given her professional expertise, Ipsum expanded her role to molecular diagnostic manager during the height of the pandemic. She was instrumental in assisting the nationwide effort to develop a high-capacity COVID-19 RT-PCR test that provided rapid and accurate results. Her efforts were successful, on April 1, 2020 Ipsum’s high-capacity COVID-19 test method became one of the first in the nation to be granted the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization (EUA).

A primary component of Ms. Roberts’ achievements during the pandemic was leading Ipsum’s program to address underserved populations. She and Ipsum’s molecular team worked with local/regional public health authorities and shared Ipsum’s testing methodology. Ms. Roberts trained and partnered with other independent laboratories to mitigate the spread of the virus and expand access to testing in rural communities where no such testing previously existed.

Kyle Rodino, PhD, D(ABMM)

Kyle Rodino, PhD, D(ABMM), is an assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine and an assistant director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was formerly a medical technologist in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC, and is board certified in medical microbiology. Dr. Rodino earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science from the University of North Carolina, a doctoral degree in microbiology and immunology from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and completed an American Society for Microbiology Clinical Postgraduate Educational Program (CPEP) fellowship in medical and public health microbiology at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Rodino is interested in optimizing clinical diagnostics, including the development and data-driven use of advanced molecular diagnostics, elevating the role of medical technologists and laboratory medicine on the healthcare team, and educating the next generation of residents and fellows through interprofessional educational opportunities.

Juan Vitelio Rodríguez, MD, FASCP

Juan Vitelio Rodríguez, MD, FASCP, is a field medical director for Vitalant’s El Paso, Texas, blood donor center where he oversees transfusion services, therapeutic apheresis, and cellular therapy collections. Dr. Rodríguez is board certified in clinical pathology and will take his transfusion medicine board exam this fall. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego, and a medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Rodríguez completed his pathology residency at Banner University Medical Center-Tucson, followed by a transfusion medicine fellowship at Yale New Haven Health Hospital. Dr. Rodríguez’s passions include demystifying transfusion, apheresis, stem cell collections, and CAR-T therapies to patients, especially from minority backgrounds. His goal is to become a leader in the minority donor center aspect, as having a diverse blood donor pool is important in having a robust donor base that best reflects the needs of communities. Dr. Rodríguez has overcome many odds—surviving premature birth of 23.5 weeks and leaving war-torn El Salvador at age four—which instilled in him a strong desire to assist others. As such, he has a strong devotion for teaching and mentoring and has won numerous regional and national awards in these areas. He is a native Spanish speaker and fluent in Japanese. Roberto Ruiz-Cordero, MD, FASCP

Roberto Ruiz-Cordero, MD, FASCP, is an associate professor of pathology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Before that, he served on the faculty in the Cytopathology Department at the University of California, San Francisco, performing palpation and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsies. Dr. Ruiz-Cordero was recruited by the University of Miami to join its faculty as associate director of cytopathology to develop the University’s Division of Molecular Cytopathology. He is actively consulted on cytology cases of hematolymphoid malignancies and has expertise in developing and signing out next-generation sequencing assays. His research interests extend across three different fields including molecular cytopathology, where he implements novel workflows and assays using cytology samples, global cancer where he works to improve cancer diagnostics in resource-constrained settings to address health care disparities, and hematopathology where, as an active member of the Cyto-Heme Diagnostic Inter-Institutional Collaborative, he focuses on generating evidence-based guidelines for the use of small specimens in lymphoma diagnostics. He completed residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, followed by fellowships in cytopathology, molecular genetics pathology, and hematopathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Erica Savage, MD, FASCP

Erica Savage, MD, FASCP, is a clinical assistant professor of pathology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and a staff pathologist at the Cleveland Clinic, where she practices gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary pathology, and is the director of the gastrointestinal, hepatic, and pancreaticobiliary pathology fellowship. Prior to her staff appointment, Dr. Savage completed a fellowship in gastrointestinal, hepatic, and pancreaticobiliary pathology at the Cleveland Clinic and a surgical pathology fellowship and combined anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Savage is a passionate educator and believes that pathology education should be expanded beyond the medical field. To this end, Dr. Savage is active with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and has worked to elevate awareness of pathology and GI pathology to the public in Cleveland, setting up demonstrations of specimen grossing, specimen processing, slide generation, and histology slide interpretation. In 2018, Dr. Savage received the Cleveland Clinic’s John Beach Hazard Distinguished Teaching Award.

Rojeet Shrestha, C(ASCP)CM, PhD, MLS(ASCPi)CM, FAACC, FACSc

Rojeet Shrestha, C(ASCP)CM, PhD, MLS(ASCPi)CM, FAACC, FACSc, is a technical director at Patients Choice Laboratories, Indianapolis, IN, where he provides technical oversight to ensure quality results for better health care. He completed his doctoral and post-doctoral training at Hokkaido University in Japan and specialized in lipoproteins and vascular diseases. He received a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory sciences at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, India, and a master's degree in clinical biochemistry at the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, in Nepal. He was involved in teaching-learning activities with medical students as a lecturer of clinical biochemistry at Nepal Medical College & Teaching Hospital, Nepal from 2010 to 2012, and as an assistant professor at the Division of Medical Laboratory Science, Hokkaido University, Japan from 2013 to 2020.

Dr. Shrestha has extensive experience in developing lipid testing and biomarkers for risk stratification of cardiovascular diseases and has authored more than 50 scientific publications. He has been recognized with numerous awards and was named to The Pathologist’s 2018 Power List of 100 most influential pathologists. He believes that effective test utilization is crucial for a sustainable healthcare economy and has been a part of the team who founded and built the first automated test utilization management platform called Laboratory Decision System (LDS).

Jennifer Stall, MD, FASCP

Jennifer Stall, MD, FASCP, is a board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist in Minneapolis/St.Paul, Minnesota. She practices pathology at Hospital Pathology Associates, where she is a lead gynecologic pathologist and serves on the board of directors. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and an M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine, and completed her pathology residency at the University of Michigan. Dr. Stall went on to study gynecologic pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was the Robert E. Scully Fellow. She has published and lectured on numerous aspects of gynecologic pathology and is a co-author of the Atlas of Gynecologic Surgical Pathology, 4th Edition. Dr. Stall also has a strong interest in organized medicine and health policy. Active in ASCP since 2010, she has served in numerous roles, including chair of the Resident Council, alternate delegate to the American Medical Association House of Delegates, delegate to the AMA Young Physicians Section, and member of the Commission for Continuing Professional Development. Locally, she serves on the Operations and Development Committee for the Allina Integrated Medical Network. Within her practice, Dr. Stall strives to be an ‘interventional’ pathologist who provides comprehensive pathology care so that patients and their care teams are empowered to make decisions at any point in their journey.

Catherine Stefaniuk, DO, FASCP

Catherine M. Stefaniuk, DO, FASCP, is an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati and is board-certified in anatomic, clinical, and molecular genetic pathology. She completed her pathology residency at the Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and her molecular genetic pathology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology at Pennsylvania State University and completed medical school at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. At the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Stefaniuk serves as the director of several clinical laboratory departments including coagulation, immunology, urinalysis, and hematology. Also, she is the director of the Diagnostic Laboratory Medicine (DLM) rotation where she has worked to create an integrative clinical pathology rotation for residents. She has worked to improve patient care in the lab through effective test utilization. Dr. Stefaniuk has also worked with hematologists and laboratory and IT staff to provide rapid hemoglobin test results to improve blood utilization for red blood cell exchanges. Currently, she is working with a diverse group of physicians to improve pre-surgical anemia diagnosis to help alleviate the need for post-surgical blood transfusions.

Ian Sue-Chue-Lam, MS, PA(ASCP)CM

Ian Sue-Chue-Lam, MS, PA(ASCP)CM, is a pathologists’ assistant at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada. Since graduating from the PA Program at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Mr. Sue-Chue-Lam's passions for PA advocacy and education have led him to maintain heavy involvement in professional organizations for pathologists’ assistants. Ian currently serves as vice chair of the Pathologists’ Assistant Section of the Canadian Association of Pathologists, as well as the inaugural corresponding Board of Trustees Adjunct to the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants. In these roles, he aims to bridge the gaps that exist between PAs in the United States and Canada. He is also the lead organizer of the Online Pathologists’ Assistant Conference, a community-driven initiative founded at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference aims to fundraise for charities reacting to the pandemic while also fostering a global sense of community among PAs and professionals in laboratory medicine.

Vanda Torous, MD, FASCP

Vanda Torous, MD, FASCP, is a surgical pathologist and cytopathologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), in Boston, MA, with board certifications in anatomic and clinical pathology and cytopathology. She completed her residency and fellowships in breast pathology and cytopathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in Boston. She is the Director of Quality Assurance and Improvement in Cytopathology and the Cytopathology Fellowship Program Director at MGH. She serves on the ASCP Website Advisory Board for Laboratory Medicine Online. She has also served on multiple American Society of Cytopathology Committees including the Ambassador and Social Media Committee, Art for Advocacy Committee, Clinical Practice Committee, and Cytopathology Program Directors Committee. Dr. Torous’ academic interests include laboratory quality assurance and improvement, with a particular interest in trainee engagement and involvement. She has published more than 40 articles, with her main research focus on laboratory utilization and patient safety. She strives to create a culture where individuals feel comfortable discussing issues so all can learn from shared experiences and work to improve patient safety. On social media, she often shares challenging cases or highlights diagnostic pitfalls, and has developed a web-based pathology platform, ezpath.org. Most of all, she enjoys being a mentor to her trainees and sharing her passion for pathology.

Stephanie Y. Whitehead, MBA, MPH, MLS(ASCP)CM, is the executive director of Pathology Services at University Health in San Antonio, TX. She earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science from the University of Southern Mississippi, followed by a Master of Business Administration from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS, and a Master of Public Health and Community Education (MPH) from A.T. Still University, in Kirksville, MO. Stephanie is an active leader in multiple professional organizations, including serving on the ASCP Council of Laboratory Professionals and as the vice-chair of the Mentorship Committee and the Diversity Advocacy Council for the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science. In addition, she serves as a diversity mentor with the international “Race Forward” program for students attending Toronto University. Ms. Whitehead co-hosts a popular, weekly laboratory podcast called “eLABorate Topics,” featuring conversations about the laboratory and leadership.
