ASCP Leadership Institute:
Leaders In and Out of the Lab

The ASCP Leadership Institute is a new program offering specially-designed leadership courses that will help participants develop effective leadership skills both inside and outside the medical laboratory.

The courses are facilitated by Catherine Stakenas, MA, and Lotte Mulder, EdM, from ASCP’s Leadership and Organizational Development Department and cover a variety of core leadership competencies, including:

  • Communication Skills
  • Self-Awareness and Feedback
  • Leadership and Management Styles
  • Organizational Effectiveness
  • Group and Team Dynamics
  • Conflict and Stress Management
  • Emotional Intelligence

Five sessions on two days are offered at the ASCP 2017 Annual Meeting. The fee for each session is $39, which is charged during the registration process.

Leadership Institute Sessions

ASCP2-17 Everything DiSC® Workplace – Wednesday, September 6
8:00am - 9:30am

The Everything DiSC® assessment identifies preferred behavioral style at work. The course will cover each of the four DiSC® preferences and teach how to adapt language, delegation, and work style to accommodate today’s workplace. Everything DiSC® is one of the essential leadership insights that helps to build more effective teams, increase job performance, and reduce conflict.

From this course, participants should be able to utilize assessment results to identify own DISC® behavior tendencies, apply other’s DISC® behavioral strengths and tendencies in order to develop more productive teams, and develop skills to manage employees more effectively using their DISC® workstyle tendencies.

ASCP3-17 Time Mastery – Wednesday, September 6
2:40pm - 4:10pm

We all face a daily dilemma: too much to do and not enough time to do it. The Time Mastery course focuses solving that dilemma. In this course, participants will learn how to focus on objectives rather than activities, commit to personal control, put first things first by defining relative importance, analyze personal time and opportunities for improvement and obtain a variety of other time mastery skills.

Each participant will complete the course with their own Time Management Map with goals and action plans established to better manage their time and priorities.

ASCP4-17 DeCoding American Generations – Wednesday, September 6
9:40am - 11:10pm

Participants will learn what makes each generation unique and gain specific tools to work together more productively. Learning more about how each generation prefers to work and what they look for in their jobs will set you and your organization up for success.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to differentiate between preferred generational communication styles and work standards, describe different generations’ behaviors and patterns and construct the skills necessary to effectively work across generations.

ASCP7-17 Organizational Savvy – Friday, September 8
1:00pm - 2:30pm

CLEAN: C=Culture and Collaboration; L=Listen, Learn, Love Your Customers; E=Encourage, Education, Engineer the Experience; A=Achieve Results; N=Networking Savvy.

Your ability to achieve results across organizational boundaries is contingent upon your effectiveness in building collaborative relationships with the people in your networks. The CLEAN Networking System is built on the skills needed to leverage your experience, education, motivation, and contribution to the organization.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to differentiate when to use authority and non-authority leadership, describe their personal strengths and development areas when interacting with others, and how to apply knowledge and skills to navigate across their internal and external networks.

ASCP8-17 Conflict Prevention and Resolution – Friday, September 8
2:40pm - 4:10pm

Attendees will learn how to use the most appropriate conflict mode in different situations and with different people by cues in their language, demeanor, and habits, how to identify ways to help their employees be more successful in managing conflict by communicating your instructions and how to provide more effective feedback.

From this course, participants should be able to identify the antecedents of conflict, assess personal conflict handling modes and techniques through the use of the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument and how to apply a comprehensive conflict resolution model.
