About Pathology Residency

Every medical student preparing for a career as a pathologist must complete a residency program prior to taking the Pathology Board Exam and becoming a certified pathologist. Residency programs are a part of postgraduate medical education and provide hands-on, in-depth training, which often includes planned learning experiences, supervised participation in clinical activities, teaching and mentoring opportunities, and group workshops and conferences. Regular formative assessments are given to ensure trainees achieve core competencies at each stage of learning.

The purpose of residency training programs is to allow students to take the knowledge they have acquired in school and apply it in a real-world setting in order to prepare them for successful careers in pathology.

Tips to Prepare for a Pathology Residency

Build a CV and Get Research Experience

  • Most pathology programs want residency candidates to have research experience. While pathology-related research is preferred, any research experience is preferable to none because it shows that you are familiar with the scientific method, formulation of hypotheses and more. Contact your pathology department about the possibility of getting involved with research projects.

Shadow a Pathologist

  • Medical school is a great time to gain exposure to the practice of pathology by shadowing a pathologist in your area. Ask at your local medical institution or a Pathology Resident who can help get you in contact with a pathologist.
  • Become a familiar face to the pathology faculty at your medical school. Introduce yourself and let them know you are interested in pathology.
  • Cultivate a mentoring relationship who can provide personalized advice as well as letters of recommendation.

Apply for Awards

  • Consider applying for the ASCP Academic Excellence and Achievement Awards. While gaining critical recognition for yourself, it also helps to build your CV.

Get Involved in a Pathology Interest Group

  • ASCP offers start-up resources and incentives for medical schools that lack Pathology Interest Groups.

ASCP Medical Student Award

The ASCP Medical Student Award honors medical students who have achieved academic excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, and shown a strong interest in the pathology profession.

Ten awardees will receive:

  • A personalized certificate
  • $100 cash award
  • Recognition on the ASCP website and in an ASCP publication or newsletter
  • A copy of Quick Compendium of Clinical Pathology, 4th Edition

The Gold Award recipient also receives formal recognition at the ASCP Annual Meeting.
