CMP: What You Need To Know

The ASCP Board of Certification developed the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) to provide opportunities to obtain a wide variety of learning experiences that demonstrate your professional competency and dedication to excellence in the medical laboratory. In addition to helping you maintain your professional certification, the CMP can help you stay current on developments in your field and provide opportunities for both professional and personal enrichment.

IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION:
Please Note: Effective July 1, 2018, the ASCP Board of Certification has discontinued issuing the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) wall certificate. Upon successful completion of the CMP, a renewal notification will be provided to certificants.

NEW in 2024: Increase of dedicated CMP points in area of certification from 2 to 8 for the following categories; AT, BB, C, CG, CT, H, HT, HTL, I, M, MB

CMP requirements will be revised to increase from 2 to 8 points (i.e. blood bank, chemistry, cytology, etc.) for certification cycles expiring in January 2024 and moving forward, regardless of when you submit your completed online declaration form. This does not increase the overall total CMP points required.

Completing CMP – Step by Step

Login to your account.
Under “My Education,” click “Check Progress” to view your credential end date and status.
Allocate completed ASCP credits or self-record non-ASCP credits.
Once all requirements have been allocated, you will be prompted to submit your CMP declaration to the BOC for review.
Submit up to three (3) months prior to your credential expiration date to allow time for processing.

Please Note: The earliest a current certification cycle (not expired) will up-date is the first day of the month in which it expires.
Retain all original certificates of attendance or any other type of support documentation in the event of an audit.

Synchronizing Multiple Credentials

Individuals with multiple credentials (certification and/or qualification) may synchronize the completion of their Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) process by request.

A three-year CMP cycle end date may be shortened to coincide with another credential CMP cycle end date as long as the three-year CMP cycle for either credential is not exceeded.

Steps to Synchronize Multiple Credentials*

Using the example below, here are the detailed steps to follow.

Two certifications with different CMP end dates:
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – Expiration October 2021
Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) – Expiration March 2020

Two qualifications with different CMP end dates:
Qualification in Apheresis (QIA) – Expiration November 2021
Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC)- Expiration February 2020

A certification and qualification with different end dates:
Histotechnologist (HTL)- Expiration December 2021
Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC)- Expiration January 2010

Choose the earliest CMP expiration date (i.e. March 2020), since you must complete all points within a three-year period.
- This will be the expiration date you will use for both credentials.

- Include your full name
- Customer ID number

Voluntary CMP Participation*

Individuals ASCP US certified prior to January 2004 or ASCPⁱ certified prior to January 2012 may participate in the CMP on a voluntary basis. Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a three-year renewal notification for your credential.

You may use the initials “CM” in superscript after your certification credential, i.e. MLS(ASCP)^CM. After the expiration date, you may no longer use the “CM” designation after your initials. If you choose not to participate in the program in the future, your certification status will not be affected.

While this program may be required for some individuals, all ASCP certificants are encouraged to participate in the program to demonstrate their continued competence in the laboratory.

Reinstatement for Expired BOC Credentials*

If you have a three-year time limited credential and you allow your credential to expire, you will no longer be permitted to use the ASCP credential after your name. To seek reinstatement of an expired credential, you must submit a completed declaration form documenting all continuing education earned within the previous three years as required by your credential category. You must also pay a reinstatement fee in addition to the application fee.

* Individuals who allow their ASCP credential to expire for ten or more years will be required to retake and pass the certification/qualification examination in order to reinstate their credential. Lapsed NCA certificants at the time of the unification will be required to retake and pass the certification examination in order to reinstate their certification effective 11/1/2019. If this applies to you, please contact 10yrexpired@ascp.org

CMP Reminder Notifications

As a courtesy, the BOC sends out several emailed CMP reminder notifications, but ultimately it’s the certificant’s responsibility to monitor their three-year certification cycle and submit their completed declaration prior to the certification end date.

Reinstatement Fee

The BOC will not grant extensions or waive the reinstatement fee due to the non-receipt of courtesy CMP reminder email notifications. To receive notifications, please be sure your email address remains current.

Inactive Status for Required CMP Participation

If you wish to request inactive status for a period of time, you must submit:

A $40 fee*
A letter describing detailed reasons for your inactive status
Documentation of extenuating circumstances for your request
The inactive status fee can be waived for individuals fulfilling mandatory military service when properly documented

Extenuating circumstances likely to be considered include:

Serious, incapacitating illness over one year in duration
Military assignment overseas over a one-year duration in a location with no access to online workshops
Financial hardship as well as personal or family-related responsibilities are not considered extenuating circumstances

*The inactive status fee will be waived for individuals residing in countries requiring mandatory military
service when that is the basis for inactive status. Documentation is required.

Reinstatement After an Inactive Status Has Expired

To be reinstated after inactive status has expired, you must submit:

A completed declaration form documenting all points earned within the extended period granted to you as required for your certification category
Pay required CMP fee(s)

At the end of the extended period, if you fail to participate and do not submit compelling reasons for continuing inactive, your certification will no longer be valid and you may no longer use the ASCP certification designation after your name.

How to Manage Points

CE Credits Earned Through ASCP

All courses completed through ASCP will show in your ASCP transcript and will automatically populate into your online CMP Declaration process.
The online CMP Declaration process will automatically track which points are being used to fulfill specific recertification requirements and those still available for allocation.
Please allocate points to the correct CMP required topic area as necessary.

CE Credits Earned Through Non ASCP CE Providers

CE providers offer a wide variety of continuing education activities. From workshops or teleconferences to subscription programs or online courses, there are plenty of opportunities to accumulate CE credits.

Non ASCP credits earned from other providers must be manually entered into your online ASCP transcript.
Make sure to allocate the points to the correct CMP required topic area.

Concerning Individual Program Approval

Because of the large volume of continuing education programs available, the Board of Certification will not respond to requests for approval of individual programs. If the program meets the criteria described under guidelines for earning CMP Points, it will be acceptable for CMP Points. Program provider must assign points or contact hours.

CMP COVID-Related Continuing Education (CE)

(CE completed March 1, 2020 - December 31, 2022)

The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) recognizes the vital work of laboratory professionals in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the critical professional development it necessitated. Because of concerns about obtaining continuing education during the pandemic due to increased workloads and/or limited availability of in-person training or conferences, the BOC is offering a time-limited opportunity to use COVID-related activities performed within the normal scope of work or outside normal job duties for up to 12 CMP points/CEUs towards recertification. These points should be self-entered as a single CMP activity and allocated under “related areas of interest” only on the online declaration form (please see criteria and instructions below).

Criteria to Claim Credits for the CMP

To be accepted, COVID-Related continuing education (CE) activities must have been completed between March 1, 2020 and December 31, 2022 (and be within your three-year CMP cycle).
Activities must be work-related and new, additional, or out-of-specialty skills or activities.
Your Manager/Supervisor must review, verify, and sign-off on the completed activities indicated on the CMP COVID-related CE Claim Form.
The maximum number of CMP points accepted on the Claim Form = 12.
These CMP points may be used for related areas of interest only.
The CMP COVID-related CE Claim Form may be used one-time only and for a single CMP cycle.

Instructions for Completing Form & Claiming Credits

Enter your name, ASCP Customer ID number, certification category and email address.
Review the COVID-related Activities listed and check the ones you completed within the specified timeframe (March 1, 2020 through December 31, 2022).
Take the completed form to your immediate Manager/Supervisor for review and signature on the bottom of the Claim Form.
Scan and save the completed Claim Form as a PDF document.
To claim credits, CMP points must be self-recorded in your online declaration form AND the COVID-Related CE Claim Form must be emailed to the ASCP Board of Certification for review and approval.

CMP requirements were revised to add 2 new points for all qualification cycles expiring in January 2024 moving forward, regardless of when you submit your completed online declaration form. This will increase the overall total CMP points required from *6 to 8.

Credential Renewal Notification

Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a three-year renewal notification for your credential.

Audit Provisions

To ensure the integrity of the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP), the ASCP Board of Certification will review and audit a percentage of declaration forms each year.

If your declaration is selected for audit, you will be notified and requested to submit supporting documentation of the completed continuing education credits submitted.

CMP Application Fee: $50

CMP Reinstatement Fee: $50

(Fee required for expired qualifications in addition to the application fee.)

Reduced Fee for Multiple Qualifications: $15

For multiple certifications with the same expiration date or within three months of each other:

You must submit multiple declarations separately on the same business day to receive the reduced fee.
For reduced fee to apply, credentials must be of same type: certification/certification or qualification/qualification.

Beginning July 1, 2024:

CMP fees for all credentials will increase by $5.
CMP reinstatement fees for all credentials will increase by $10.
CMP fees for additional credentials will increase by $5.
Scholarship pricing for resource limited countries will remain unchanged.
