Chicago 2014 WLP Day 2

6816 What Type is This?
8:30 am - 4:30 pm 6.5 CMLE Credits

Michele Hayes, MS, MT(ASCP)SBB
Program Director for the School of Clinical Laboratory Science,  Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, PA

Have you ever encountered a sample in the blood bank that hasn’t read the book? You need to cross match red cells, but you can’t determine the patient’s ABO type! This intermediate workshop is designed to enhance your basic blood bank skills. You’ll review the important and complex ABO Blood Group System and develop problem-solving skills. You will gain confidence as you develop a toolbox of ideas that can be used to resolve serologic problems and ABO typing discrepancies through interactive case studies. This toolbox will include common techniques that are available in most transfusion services, and additional methods, along with the actions that can be taken if an ABO discrepancy cannot be resolved.

Following this workshop, you will be able to:
  • Describe and discuss the ABO Blood Group System antigens and ABO Subgroups.
  • Describe possible causes and contributing factors of ABO typing discrepancies.
  • Identify ABO typing discrepancies and determine the appropriate actions to resolve the discrepancy.
  • Analyze test results to determine ABO type and appropriate transfusion recommendation.

“All the examples and the discussions on problem solving were very informative. Gave me more confidence in blood banking.”

9336 Body Fluid Analysis: Completely Analyzed!

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced laboratorian, this workshop will take your knowledge and skills in body fluid analysis to the next level! You'll benefit from the analysis of the processes needed to become an expert in this area, with step-by-step instructions for manual cell counting, an overview of automated cell count analysis, case examples of cell recognition, advice for integrating results from other lab sections, and a QA/educational process that you can implement in your laboratory. Bring your questions. You'll leave prepared to "Completely Analyze" your own approach to body fluid analysis.

Following this workshop, you will be able to:
  • Describe techniques and procedures that ensure accurate cell counts and differentials in body fluid analysis.
  • Identify features that differentiate reactive versus neoplastic cells.
  • Learn to integrate additional laboratory studies for a complete understanding of body fluid analysis.
