    Cervical cancer is the No. 1 women’s cancer in sub-Saharan Africa and is the third most common cancer in women worldwide, with 530,000 new cases and 275,00 deaths annually. Some 80 to 90 percent of women in sub-Saharan Africa have never had a pelvic exam. More than 85 percent of the global burden of cervical cancer occurs in resource-limited countries, yet the World Health Organization estimates less than 5 percent of these women have access to screening even once in a lifetime.     New Unified Language for HPV Biology Endeavors to Reduce Miscommunication in Anogenital Cancers and Precancers

    The confusion over terminology used by different medical specialty groups has caused miscommunication among clinicians involved in diagnosing HPV-associated anogenital cancers and precancers, resulting in misdiagnoses and mistreatment. In response, an influential group of specialists from a variety of backgrounds interested in this subject convened two years ago to study whether to create a standardized terminology for these lesions.
