    Cervical cancer is the No. 1 women’s cancer in sub-Saharan Africa and is the third most common cancer in women worldwide, with 530,000 new cases and 275,00 deaths annually. Some 80 to 90 percent of women in sub-Saharan Africa have never had a pelvic exam. More than 85 percent of the global burden of cervical cancer occurs in resource-limited countries, yet the World Health Organization estimates less than 5 percent of these women have access to screening even once in a lifetime.     The confusion over terminology used by different medical specialty groups has caused miscommunication among clinicians involved in diagnosing HPV-associated anogenital cancers and precancers, resulting in misdiagnoses and mistreatment. In response, an influential group of specialists from a variety of backgrounds interested in this subject convened two years ago to study whether to create a standardized terminology for these lesions.
