Urgent Congressional Action Needed: CLFS Under Attack in SGR Fix

Say No to Additional Cuts to CLFS
Medicare Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule (CLFS) to be used to Pay for Payroll Tax Extension, Reverse of Medicare Physician Reimbursement Cuts

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) urges its entire membership to contact their representatives in Washington to revise a proposed Congressional deal to use the Medicare Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule to pay for Payroll Tax Cut extension and to prevent a 27 percent cut in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.

While ASCP appreciates Congress’ efforts to block a massive cut in Medicare physician reimbursement rates (caused by the sustainable growth rate), singling out one sector of Medicare services to benefit many others is inappropriate and imposes too harsh a burden on the laboratory industry. The proposed Congressional deal would impose an additional $2.7 billion in cuts on the CLFS over 10 years. Over the last few years, Congress has already cut the CLFS substantially, including an 8 percent cut in the CLFS over the years 2011-2015 as part of the health care reform package as well as an 11 percent cut over 10 years in the form of an annual productivity adjustment.
