ASCP Selects Michael L. Wilson, MD, for Top Spot on the American Journal of Clinical Pathology

Monday, July 09, 2012

A new and exciting future for the American Journal of Clinical Pathology (AJCP) lies ahead as Michael L. Wilson, MD, joins the Journal as Editor-in-Chief on Aug. 1. He is Professor and Vice-Chair in the Department of Pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and has served as the Section Editor for Microbiology and Infectious Disease on AJCP’s Editorial Board since 2000. Dr. Wilson has earned numerous honors and awards, served in leadership roles in multiple professional organizations, and published extensively during his distinguished career. He earned his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and was a postgraduate fellow in Medical Microbiology at the Duke University School of Medicine.

The ASCP selection committee searched for an editor who had vision and creativity, as well as skills as an innovator, mentor, and team-builder. They also looked for a pathologist with the ability to create a legacy.

“Dr. Wilson’s appointment follows a comprehensive search and extensive review of a field of outstanding candidates,” said ASCP President C. Bruce Alexander, MD, FASCP. “His academic record, his participation and standing in national organizations, his editorial experience, and his vision for AJCP persuaded the selection committee that he was the right choice to be AJCP’s next editor.”

“The first and greatest challenge will be to represent all of the most important work, research efforts, and best practices in the field, and then to communicate this to our membership,” Dr. Wilson said. He listed his second major goal as significantly growing the international presence of the Journal, an endeavor to distribute knowledge benefiting health care in developing areas of the world.

“Among his objectives in the new role, Dr. Wilson will work to advance AJCP’s digital strategy and expand its global footprint, both by increasing its author roster and its readership internationally,” said ASCP Executive Vice President Dr. Blair Holladay.

“Humbled and honored” with his selection as Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Wilson said one critical element to any successful journal is a “true team effort.” With that perspective, he plans to reach out to the editorial board and myriad stakeholders of the flagship Journal as he moves forward with a fresh and reinvigorated approach.

Dr. Wilson will succeed Mark R. Wick, MD, who has served as Editor-in-Chief of AJCP since 1990.
