ASCP Member Serves on the Frontlines of Molecular Diagnostics

Sarah F. Torres, MLS(ASCP)CM, looks for molecular signatures of injury or illness that are not easily detectable in soldiers involved in combat missions worldwide. A molecular biologist with the Clinical Investigation Facility (CIF) at David Grant U.S. Air Force Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base, Calif., she seeks biomarkers showing damage to the brain or central nervous system. By devising methods to detect and measure these molecular messages, Ms. Torres hopes to develop diagnostic tools for healthcare providers. She earned her ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) certification after completing her bachelor’s degree while on reserve duty. Her hard work qualified her to apply and obtain her dream job at CIF.
