Money Matters: Participate in the 2012 ASCP Wage Survey
Thursday, March 15, 2012
Every other year, the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) conducts a crucial service for its members and the profession: the ASCP Wage and Vacancy Surveys. These surveys, conducted for the past 22 years, have become the primary source of information for academic, government, and industry experts in defining the state of the nation’s laboratory professional workforce.

ASCP Wage and Vacancy Surveys have become the primary source of information for academic, government, and industry experts in defining the state of the nation’s laboratory professional workforce.

This year, the ASCP will begin with conducting its 2012 Wage and Vacancy surveys of the laboratory professionals in the field. Some of the new activities included in the surveys include:
• Partnering with the following associations to seek their members and employees’ participation.
- AABB
- American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants
- American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science
- American Association for Clinical Chemistry
- American Medical Technologists
- American Society of Cytopathology
- American Society for Cytotechnology
- American Society for Microbiology
- Clinical Laboratory Management Association
- ARUP
- LabCorp
- Quest
• New significant questions added to the Wage survey:
- Whether or not the respondent is currently licensed by a state to work as a laboratory professional to determine if states with licensure pay more compared to the rest of the country. (California, Florida, Georgia,* Hawaii, Louisiana, Montana, North Dakota, New York, Nevada, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, and West Virginia)
- The number of years the respondent has been working in the clinical laboratory profession to evaluate the salaries of those who has been in the field for a longer period of time compared to entry-level laboratory personnel.
- The number of staff members the respondent supervises and has as direct reports, to find out if having more staff corresponds to achieving a higher salary.
- Traveling professionals, subcontractors and contract laboratory professionals are added under employment status to examine their salaries compared to permanent, part-time, per diem, or PRN-on call laboratory professionals.
• The Wage survey launched on March 22, 2012, and will be available until April 30. Click here to complete the survey.
• New significant questions added to the Vacancy Survey:
- Supervisors or managers will be asked if new testing technologies in their laboratories have a substantial impact in their staffing needs. Does this leads to reduction or increase in staff?
- Supervisors or managers will be asked what happens to unfilled position, whether or not it is eliminated or left open until filled.
The final draft is under way, and the target launch for the Vacancy Survey is mid-April 2012.
The publication date for both Wage and Vacancy survey reports is the November 2012 issue of LabMedicine.
* Georgia does not “license” but does specify personnel qualifications that are more exacting than the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments.
