American Society for Clinical Pathology

ASCP Resident Council Subspecialty Grant Recipients 2009-2010

The American Society for Clinical Pathology has awarded a total of $22,000 in resident grants during the academic year 2009-2010 to defray the cost of doing elective rotations at outside institutions in fields of pathology in which the resident desires intensive exposure, especially in the form of consult material.

Each ASCP grant will provide a $1000 or $2000 stipend according to the length of study. The time period of study will vary for each resident between two and four weeks.

The following grants were announced at the ASCP Resident Council Reception during the USCAP meeting in Boston, MA, on March 8, 2009.

Recipients of the 2009-2010 Subspecialty Grants:

Angela K. Bohlke, MD, Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA, was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of surgical pathology at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (Ghana).

Shahid Bokhari, MD, Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA, was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of flow cytometry with Dr. Brent Wood at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Thomas J. Bollinger, MD, MPH, Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando, FL, was awarded a $1,000 2-week grant to work in the field of hematopathology with Dr. Vanessa Dayton at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

Nicole M. DeMers, MD, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of bone and soft tissue with Dr. Christopher Fletcher at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Dr. Andrew Rosenberg at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

Micaiah H. Evans, MD, MPH, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of pathology informatics with Dr. Anil Parwani at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Candace W. Horney, MD, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston Salem, NC, was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of forensic pathology with Dr. Charles Hirsch at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner-The City of New York.

John H. Irlam, DO, University of Toledo Medical Center, Toledo, OH, was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of dermapathology with Dr. Jacqueline Junkins-Hopkins at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore.

Amir A. Samani, MD, PhD, McMaster University Medical Center, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of hematopathology with Dr. Robert Hasserjian at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

John M. Wayne, MD, MT(ASCP)SLS, Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, IN, was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of hematopathology with Dr. Joseph Papiez at US Labs, Brentwood, Tennessee.

Anne M. Winkler, MD, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA, was awarded a $1,000 2-week grant to work in the field of advanced platelet testing with Dr. Jerry Gottshall at the BloodCenter of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Lanjing Zhang, MD, MS, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, NY, was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of gastrointestinal and pancreatic pathology with Drs. Elizabeth A. Montgomery and Ralph Hruban at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore.

Xuchen Zhang, MD, PhD, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY, was awarded a $2,000 4-week grant to work in the field of thoracic pathology with Dr. William Travis at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
