The ASCP 2009-2010 Resident Handbook is now available. The 71-page spiral-bound color booklet serves as the perfect introduction to the ASCP for residents. It includes information on ASCP membership, volunteer opportunities, educational programs, publications, requirements for Board certification and other resources residents will find useful.
In the handbook, benefits of ASCP membership are explained and volunteer opportunities are outlined. The role and activities of the ASCP Resident Council are discussed alongside a broader history of the ASCP as a whole.
It is important that residents and their program directors are aware of all the opportunities and resources available from the ASCP. The handbook serves as a guide to the many opportunities ASCP offers, including subspecialty grants, opportunities to present and publish research in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, and events like the ASCP’s “Hill Day,” where residents who have an interest in the political process can spend a day meeting with their senators and representatives discussing pathology-related issues.
Also new at the ASCP website is the resident online membership application. It is now easier than ever for residents to begin their relationship with the ASCP. With just a few clicks of the mouse, residents can send in their application. No more printing out forms and faxing them back!
“Resident membership is free, and the benefits are immeasurable,” said Ahren C. Rittershaus, MD, 2009 ASCP Resident Council Chair, “from free online access to the best journals in pathology, to grants and participation in the Fellowship and Job Market Survey . . . There are also discounts on the best textbooks and discounted registration to ASCP’s many educational events, including the Annual Meeting.”
