Michael Feldman, MD, PhD, FASCP, was honored this year with the first-ever ASCP President’s Award. The award recognizes an outstanding ASCP volunteer who has gone above and beyond his or her duties and performed outstanding service for the Society. This year’s recipient, Dr. Feldman, was selected by Immediate Past ASCP President Barbara J. McKenna, MD, FASCP, for his dedication and outstanding contributions in creating the infrastructure for ASCP online education, including the ASCP Asset Warehouse.
The award was presented at the ASCP Matrix Meeting in December 2009 in Chicago.
Dr. Feldman serves as the Chair of the ASCP Instructional Technology Committee. His commitment as a volunteer and interests in the development, integration and adoption of information technologies in pathology have resulted in the creation of the ASCP Asset Warehouse, a soon-to-be launched repository of all of ASCP’s intellectual assets stored in an accessible, searchable format. The assets are cataloged using custom tagging features defined by a group of pathology experts. In every stage from conception to implementation, the project has benefited immensely from Dr. Feldman’s leadership, enthusiasm, and exemplary expertise in the field of pathology and informatics. He continues to lead several initiatives related to the ASCP Asset Warehouse and plays a critical role in the integration of technology in continuing education provided by ASCP.
Feldman became more involved with the ASCP at the suggestion of a fellow ASCP member, John E. Tomaszewski, MD, FASCP. “John asked me if I would be interested in an exciting opportunity to work with the ASCP and help them develop an IT and eLearning strategy,” said Dr. Feldman. “How could I turn down an offer like that?”
Dr. Feldman was a member of the ASCP’s Commission on Education and has presented numerous sessions on digital imaging at ASCP Annual Meetings. He now serves on the new ASCP Commission on Continuing Professional Development.
He is Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He also serves the University as Assistant Dean for Information Technology at the School of Medicine; Medical Director of Pathology Informatics at the Medical Center; and Director of the Cancer Center Core Tissue Bank.
