Barbara J. McKenna, MD, FASCP was installed as the new ASCP president at the Society’s Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 16, in Baltimore. She has served in various capacities for the ASCP including Vice President, and Member-At- Large on the Board of Directors.
McKenna has more than 30 years of experience in the field of pathology, beginning as a research associate at Wayne State University. McKenna is now an associate professor in the Department of Pathology, the director of the surgical pathology fellowship program as well as an attending physician at the University of Michigan Hospitals, Ann Arbor, Mich.
McKenna received her B.S. from Michigan State University and her MD from the University of Michigan. She has held many positions including staff physician, director of laboratories and chief of pathology. She has also co-authored many peer-reviewed publications, articles and abstracts on clinical pathology. In 2003 McKenna was the recipient of the ASCP Commission on Continuing Education George F. Stevenson Distinguished Service Award.
McKenna serves as the President of the American Society of Clinical Pathology after holding several other key roles within the organization such as commissioner for Commission on Graduate Medical Education in Pathology and the Commission for Assessment. She has also served the ASCP on the ASCP Maintenance of Certification Committee, the bylaws committee, as co-director of the Resident Review Course, and chair of the Resident In-Service Examination (RISE) Committee.
McKenna has also served as the President of the A. James French Society of Pathology and is a member of several other medical associations including College of American Pathology and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
