Resolving an urgent problem in the blood bank is stressful-especially when an acute clinical situation ups the stress exponentially. This workshop will expand your basic blood bank skills and increase your confidence in dealing with critical situations. You’ll learn how to handle these (and other) scenarios:

  • The emergency department physician needs blood immediately for a gunshot victim and you cannot get the ABO front type and back type to agree
  • The obstetrician requests blood for a patient who is hemorrhaging after delivery, but the antibody screening is positive, the entire panel is positive, and the Rh control is positive
  • The internist requests blood for a teenager originally diagnosed with a bad case of the flu, but the patient has a 5 gram hemoglobin and all the units cross matched are incompatible

Following this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Develop effective problem-solving strategies
  • Resolve critical blood bank situations in a timely, logical, and cost-effective manner
