Accurate interpretation of peripheral blood smears is essential in ensuring correct diagnosis and appropriate follow-up of patient management. When performing differentials, do you have confidence in your ability to provide definite cell identification or to discover the morphological clues that indicate appropriate additional testing? Attend this session to enhance your hematology knowledge and sharpen your morphologic skills for examining and interpreting blood smears!

You will participate in thorough case study discussions of the key diagnostic features and laboratory evaluation of various anemias, gain skills in recognizing a variety of anemic conditions, and learn to use the schematic classification of these anemias to indicate the correct disorder. By studying the peripheral blood smears of leukemic patients, you will learn about the morphology of abnormal leukocytes. And, you'll gain a complete understanding of the FAB and WHO classifications of various leukemias, myeloproliferative syndrome, and myelodysplastic syndromes.

Following this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Determine the patient's anemic disorder by using the schematic classification of anemias.
  • Recognize significant morphological abnormalities in blood smears of patients with a variety of anemic, preleukemic, and leukemic conditions.
  • Discuss the key diagnostic features of various anemic and leukemic disorders.
  • Explain the FAB and WHO classification systems.
