Throughout her 36-year career, Teresa Harris, MT(ASCP)SBBCM,CQIA,CQA(ASQ), distinguished herself in the area of blood banking and transfusion medicine, and has dedicated herself to teaching and sharing her expertise with others.
Ms. Harris is being honored by the ASCP with its 2012 Member Excellence in Education Award for her contributions to the profession. “As a lecturer and educator, I hope I inspired people to think about what they were doing in the lab and why they were doing it, and not just performing a test,” she said.
She joined the Red Cross in 1981. When she retired from the organization last year, Ms. Harris had served as a Senior Associate in operational support and in immunohematology reference laboratories for the Red Cross. While much has changed over the years in the area of blood banking, she said the basics are the same.
“Getting the right blood to the right patient, ensuring that the blood is compatible, and giving the optimal blood product for patient safety remain the important aspects of blood banking,” Ms. Harris wrote.
Her voluntary activities with professional associations are many. She had been active with the American Association for Blood Banking for many years when she decided that, while blood banking represents her vocation, she also wanted to give back to the profession.
“ASCP gave me the certification that demonstrated my knowledge base,” she said. “I am proud of that. ASCP is not only the heart and soul of my profession but also the brain.”
Her ASCP volunteer activities have included chairing the Clinical Laboratory Professional Council and serving on the Board of Directors, the Executive Board, and the ASCP Task Force on Governance.
A resident of Washington State, Ms. Harris loves sea kayaking, back country skiing, mountain biking, fly fishing, and ice climbing.
