2012 ASCP Mastership

“Kathy's easy-going personality, her collegial nature, desire for excellence, and willingness to serve and work for the greater good are attractive traits that made her the perfect candidate to be Chair of the Board, a position she held for two terms.”

A leader in phlebotomy and phlebotomy education, Kathleen Becan-McBride, EdD, MASCP, MLS(ASCP)CM, understands that quality laboratory results start with a proper sample.

Thirty years ago, as Chair of the Clinical Laboratory Science Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston (UTHSCH), when she was teaching phlebotomy to medical technology students, Dr. Becan-McBride learned that area hospitals faced a severe shortage of phlebotomists. She successfully applied for federal workforce development funding to establish a phlebotomy training program and hire faculty. However, her faculty had no training manuals.

So Dr. Becan-McBride enlisted a faculty member, Diana Garza, EdD, MLS(ASCP)CM, and the two wrote a textbook that was published by Prentice Hall. The textbook has sold all over the world, as have many more books and videos the pair produced.

“My passion for teaching phlebotomy has been invigorating,” said Dr. Becan-McBride, who is currently a Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at UTHSCH and Director of UTHSCH Workforce and Resource Development. As a tenured professor in the medical school, she has taught medical technology students, cytogenetics students, phlebotomy students, and second-year medical students.

Last year, Dr. Becan-McBride received a federal workforce development grant to establish a biosafety training center as a collaborative program between UTHSCH and Houston Community College.

Her involvement with ASCP began 34 years ago and has included chairing the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Board of Governors from 2008 to 2010 and holding a leadership role in the merger that expanded the Board of Registry (BOR) to the BOC. She has served as Chair of the BOR Long Range Planning Committee, the BOC Nominating Committee, and the BOC International Certification Committee, and served on many committees and task forces. ASCP is recognizing Dr. Becan-McBride’s contributions to the profession with the ASCP Mastership.

“Kathy's easy-going personality, her collegial nature, desire for excellence, and willingness to serve and work for the greater good are attractive traits that made her the perfect candidate to be Chair of the Board, a position she held for two terms,” wrote Walter Oliviera, MLS(ASCP)CM, SI, Chair of the ASCP BOC.
