A well-known and highly-respected laboratory professional, Cynthia Johns, MSA, MLS(ASCP)CMSHCM, has worked tirelessly as an ASCP volunteer for more than 30 years. She has been an educator for ASCP since 1980, and has risen through the leadership ranks of ASCP to serve as Chair of the ASCP Board of Governors. Currently, she is a member of the Commission on Continuing Professional Development and serves as a Lead Ambassador for the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) International Certification Committee.

In her current role, Ms. Johns is Senior IT Technical Specialist at the Laboratory Corporation of American, Burlington, N.C. Over the years, she has served on many ASCP committees and boards, including the ASCP Associate Member Section and ASCP Board of Directors, and presented many educational workshops and teleconferences. Her public policy skills have been demonstrated on the national level as a member of ASCP’s Government Relations Committee and ASCP’s Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee (CLIAC).

Ms. Johns is being recognized with the 2012 ASCP President’s Award for her contributions to the profession and to ASCP. She is also this year’s speaker for the Barbara M. Castleberry Lecture for Laboratory Professionals at the 2012 ASCP Annual Meeting.

Ms. Johns’ commitment to patient care has paved the way for her to serve in numerous volunteer positions, including as an ASCP international consultant and trainer for the President's Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in Africa.

“Cindy has moved the international front forward for all areas of the BOC examination certification activities,” wrote Kathleen Becan-McBride, EdD, MLS(ASCP)CM, Immediate Past Chair of the ASCP BOC Board of Governors.

Ms. Johns credits Douglas Triplett, MD, with encouraging her to become involved in ASCP. “I am very proud to be recognized as a dedicated laboratory professional, and as someone who has the best interests of the profession at heart,” she said.
