ASCP Global Outreach Expands into Asia with new Notice of Award
This September, ASCP Global Outreach was awarded $5.5 million from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to continue its work in laboratory-based education and training around the world. Since 2005, Global Outreach has been focused on twelve countries in Africa and the Caribbean, performing trainings, facilitating curriculum development, and organizing laboratory mentorships. This year, the department will have the opportunity to expand its scope across the Pacific Ocean, as Vietnam and Cambodia become Global Outreach’s newest partners.
The CDC offices in Vietnam are already somewhat familiar with ASCP’s Global Outreach efforts – their new Laboratory Program Director, Kyle Bond, had previously collaborated with ASCP in Nigeria. In 2007, ASCP staff and consultants conducted a Chemistry, Hematology, and CD4 Training of Trainers in Abuja, followed by a Harmonization workshop later in the year. In 2008, a Pre-Service Assessment was conducted by consultants and ASCP members, Cathy Robinson MSA, MT(ASCP), CLS-G, and Wendy Arneson, MS, MT(ASCP).
ASCP is looking forward to a continuing collaborating with Mr. Bond in Vietnam as we prepare to begin Pre-Service, a series of trainings and consultations that will work toward improving the university Medical Laboratory Scientist curriculum. Also requested are Chemistry, Hematology, and CD4 Testing trainings for laboratory technicians in Vietnam.
The CDC offices in Cambodia are also looking forward to working with Global Outreach staff and consultants. They, too, have requested an emphasis on Pre-Service activities in order to improve their country’s laboratory curriculum.
ASCP Global Outreach is looking for Vietnamese or Khmer speaking medical technologists. If you or someone you know is interested in consulting with ASCP on these or other projects, please click here.
