Michael Wilson, MD, FASCP, Chair of the ASCP Institute Advisory Committee, recently represented ASCP at the 9th International Conference of the Association of Pathologists of East, Central and South Africa (APECSA) held October 22-25 in Mombassa, Kenya. Wilson was invited to give the first talk at the Opening Ceremony, titled An Update on Tuberculosis: Global Burden of Infection, Antimicrobial Resistance, and New Diagnostic Tests.
“The meeting was very well attended and of the highest quality,” said Wilson. “The scientific presentations and posters were first-rate. . . the Kenyans were gracious hosts and the meeting organization was excellent.”
Ann Marie Nelson, MD, FASCP, of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC, obtained the invitation for ASCP to be represented at the meeting through her contacts with members of APECSA, and her ongoing work with pathologists in Africa. A member of the ASCP Institute Advisory Committee, she was recently awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to support the building of sustainable pathology services in Kampala, Uganda.
During the meeting, Wilson distributed applications for ASCP membership, of which, 43 applications were completed and returned to ASCP. The ASCP is offering complimentary membership to pathologists and clinical scientists from resource limited countries.
