Board of Registry certification examinations—Computer Adaptive Testing. The ASCP Board of Registry uses computer adaptive testing (CAT). With CAT, when a person answers a question correctly, the next test question has a slightly higher level of difficulty. The difficulty level of the questions presented to the examinee continues to increase until a question is answered incorrectly. Then a slightly easier question is presented. In this way the test is tailored to the individual’s ability level.
Each question in the test bank is calculated for level of difficulty and is assigned a content area that matches the content area on the Examination Content Outline for that particular examination. The value given to each question is determined by the level of difficulty. Therefore, the examinee must answer enough difficult questions to achieve a score above the pass point. To pass the certification examination, the examinee’s scores must exceed the minimum pass score, previously established by the Board of Registry examination committee.
Examinees should not focus on the difficulty level of the questions, but should continue to answer each question to the best of their ability.
The examinations are scheduled for 2 hours and 30 minutes with 100 questions. The preliminary test results (pass/fail) will appear on the computer screen. Examination scores will be emailed within 10 business days after the examination administration.
The official score report will indicate “pass” or “fail” status and the scaled score on the total examination. A scaled score is statistically derived from the raw score (number of correctly answered questions). Because each examinee has taken a different form of the examination, scaled scores are used so that tests may be compared on the same scale.
For examinees unsuccessful in passing the examination, the scaled score on each of the subtests will be indicated on the score report. These subtest scores cannot be calculated to obtain the total score. These scores are provided as a means of demonstrating strengths and weaknesses.
What to bring to the examination center. When examinees arrive at the examination center, they must present a passport with photo and signature, a second personal identification and the admission letter to the examination proctor. Taking the examination. At the beginning of the examination, the examinee must verify that his identification information and examination category are correct as shown on the computer screen. Next, the directions for entering responses will appear.
The examinations in all categories consist of multiple choice questions, presented one at a time on the computer screen. Each question must be answered to the best of the examinee’s ability when it is presented. At the end of the examination, examinees may review some or all of their responses and change them if they wish. After all questions have been answered, the program enters the review mode. In the review mode, the examinee may evaluate or change their responses entered.
When the examinee has completed reviewing the examination, the End Exam button on the screen must be pressed to end the examination. A message will appear on the screen, asking the examinee to verify that he wishes to exit the examination. If the examinee responds by using the YES button, the examination is completed.
