International Certification by the ASCP Board of Registry

You’re serious about your career. That’s why international certification by the ASCP Board of Registry (BOR) is important to you. It serves as a symbol of your commitment to the highest standards of your profession and to quality patient care.

Since 1928, BOR has been widely recognized as the preeminent leader in the certification of medical laboratory professionals. Today, BOR offers a formal certification process that requires education, clinical training and experience, and successful completion of the certification examination for Technicians and Technologists.

The International BOR Certification Process

Congratulations on your decision to apply for international certification by the ASCP Board of Registry! So, start now—there’s some work that you need to do before you can take the examination.

Ready? We’re here to help you apply for the International Certification Examination, step by step:

Identify the examination you’re applying for and determine your eligibility. (Remember: You can only apply for one category within a three-month period.) For each certification category, you’ll find a choice of routes that you can take to verify your eligibility for the examination, depending on the education and training you’ve completed. Gather your education and experience documentation. You’ll need to provide documentation of your education and training and specified experience requirements that you’ve fulfilled in your area of specialization. Before you apply for the examination, you should assemble all the documentation needed to—

Apply for the examination. Complete and submit the application form with the non-refundable application fee, along with all the documentation you gathered in Step 2—apply online and pay by credit card.

If you receive an error message when attempting to submit your online application for an ASCPi certification examination, this may be due to your network administrator's firewall. If this is the case, you may pursue one of two options:

Submit your application using a different computer, OR

Add the address "tmawebservices.ascp.org" as an exception to the proxy server. Please follow directions below:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Under Tools, select Internet Options.
  3. Select Connections tab.
  4. Select LAN Settings box.
  5. Select Advanced... box.
  6. Under Exceptions, add tmawebservices.ascp.org.
  7. Select OK on each box to exit.
  8. Go to www.ascp.org/international to resubmit your application.

Schedule your examination. Once your application and eligibility documentation has been approved by BOR, you’ll receive an admission e-mail with instructions for making an appointment. Then, it’s time to schedule your examination at a Pearson Professional Center. View scheduling policies. Visit the Pearson site for ASCP examinations to identify a location that’s convenient for you.

Study for Exam. Review the examination content guidelines for your certification category. BOR also offers study materials.

Prepare for your examination day. Review Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) method that is used by BOR. Find out what to bring to examination center, and view cancellation and rescheduling rules.

Watch for your results. Examination scores will be emailed to you within 10 days after the examination.

Watch for your certificate. You’ll receive your certificate approximately six to eight weeks after your examination date. Your International Certification is valid for life.
