Before ASCPi, there was no internationally recognized certification for phlebotomists in Hong Kong. The Department of Pathology, Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital has organized a Professional Certificate Program in Phlebotomy, targeting participants currently under employment in hospitals or laboratories whose duties involve phlebotomy and who wish to gain international recognition for their jobs. This program prepares participants to obtain the International Phlebotomy Technician certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the credentials of PBT(ASCPi) will be granted upon successful completion of the ASCPi examination in Hong Kong.

The first course started in September 2007. Through a series of lectures, practical and clinical attachment, participants will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, proper labeling of specimens and quality assurance. Students will be taught specimen handling, processing and accessioning, as well as the contribution of phlebotomists to reducing pre-analytical error and ensuring laboratory quality. Finally, the medical code of practice and ethics, together with patient communication and interaction skills will be covered.
