American Society for Clinical Pathology

advocacy: Get Involved

President Lincoln once said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” That’s why uniting ASCP’s diverse membership of more than 130,000 pathologists, physicians, technologists, technicians and other laboratory professionals, is such a powerful force for advocacy. As one of the largest medical specialty groups in the world, ASCP is uniquely poised to advocate on its members' behalf. ASCP members have generated tens of thousands of letters to federal and state policymakers on a myriad of issues such as competitive bidding, anti-markup provisions, workforce shortages, direct billing and other issues affecting the laboratory community and patient care.

Here is an example of how ASCP members make a difference: Through your advocacy, ASCP has succeeded in securing pro-patient regulatory provisions that help prevent pod labs and abusive billing practices. The new regulation—supported by ASCP—is part of the 2008 Medicare Physical Fee Schedule (PFS) final rule, released November 1st.
