A breast cancer pathologist, Kimberly Allison, MD, unexpectedly became a breast cancer patient. She wrote about her experience in the book Red Sunshine, which turned her terrifying diagnosis into an inspiring memoir. Her diagnosis of stage 3 breast cancer in 2008 came two weeks after Dr. Allison was promoted to Director of Breast Cancer Pathology at the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle. When her life turned upside down, she was only 33 years old and nursing her second child. Through the annual Siemens–ASCP Scholarship Program, ASCP and Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics are once again poised to award more than $125,000 in scholarships, thanks to the generous contributions of Siemens and ASCP member donations. Each year, ASCP and Siemens award scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in medical laboratory science to defray education costs, promote the profession, and address the laboratory workforce shortage. Moderated by Shannon Castle, ASCP Director of Global Outreach, the session profiled ASCP’s laboratory and laboratory workforce strengthening activities, such as training laboratory professional faculty, improving the curriculum for laboratory professionals, and enhancing laboratory procedures and facilities to receive accreditation.
