The ASCP Board of Certification examinations have been approved for licensure purposes by the state of California. To get started, review the four options below to determine your eligibility, then view and follow the steps provided for your option. Please note, it is your responsibility to review and complete all licensure requirements for the state of California.

The ASCP Board of Certification examination for Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) has been approved for licensure purposes by the state of California effective October 1, 2006. The ASCP Board of Certification examinations for Technologist in Chemistry (C), Specialist in Chemistry (SC), Technologist in Microbiology (M) and Specialist in Microbiology (SM) have been approved for licensure purposes by the state of California effective March 1, 2008. ASCP Board of Certification examinations for Technologist in Blood Banking (BB), Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB), Technologist in Hematology (H) and Specialist in Hematology (SH) have been approved for licensure effective July 1, 2009. Information on the requirements and application process may be obtained at the CDPH Laboratory Field Service web site. It is your responsibility to review and complete all licensure requirements of the appropriate state.

Note: There is a four-year "look back" period, meaning that any individual who has taken either the ASCP BOR/BOC Medical Technologist, MT or Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS certification examination after October 1, 2002 does not need to retake the examination. Individuals certified as Technologist in Chemistry, C(ASCP), Specialist in Chemistry, SC(ASCP), Technologist in Microbiology, M(ASCP) or Specialist in Microbiology, SM(ASCP) after March 1, 2004 do not need to retake the examination. Individuals certified as Technologist in Blood Banking BB(ASCP), Specialist in Blood Banking SBB(ASCP), Technologist in Hematology H(ASCP) and Specialist in Hematologist SH(ASCP) after July 1, 2005 do not need to retake the examination.

    The ASCP Board of Certification examination for Medical Laboratory Technician has been approved for licensure purposes by the state of California effective June 1, 2007. Applicants for California licensure must first apply to California Laboratory Field Services and follow the state application process. Information on the requirements and application process may be obtained at the CDPH Laboratory Field Service web site. It is your responsibility to review and complete all licensure requirements of the appropriate state.

    Note: There is a four-year "look back" period, meaning that any individual already certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician, MLT(ASCP) after June 1, 2003 will not need to retake the examination for California state licensure.

    • OPTION 1: CA Licensure only
    • OPTION 2: CA Licensure and MLT(ASCP) Certification
    • OPTION 3: MLT(ASCP) Certification before June 1, 2003
    • OPTION 4: MLT(ASCP) Certification after June 1, 2003

      PBT Certification Examination Application Fee: $135

      ASCP Board of Certification, an approved certification organization by the California Department of Public Health, offers a certification examination in phlebotomy, Phlebotomy Technician, PBT(ASCP). Examinations are administered on computer year round by appointment. It is your responsibility to review and complete all licensure requirements of the appropriate state.

      The BOC Certification for Phlebotomy Process

      Step 1: Meet the certification examination eligibility requirements.

      Step 2: Submit required documents with a non-refundable application fee to the ASCP Board of Certification office:

      Step 3: Once you have been determined eligible for certification examination you will receive an email notification regarding the Admission Notification from the ASCP Board of Certification with instructions on how to make an appointment for examination at the testing location of your choice.

      Step 4: Study for Exam. View study materials.

      Step 5: Take the certification examination. Immediately after you complete the examination, you will see your pass/fail result on the computer screen.

      Step 6: Receive your examination scores after two(2) business days of the date of your examination. Your scores will also be mailed to the California Department of Public Health if you completed and mailed the release form to our office.

        The ASCP Board of Certification examination for Technologist in Molecular Biology has been approved for licensure purposes by the state of California effective October 23, 2009. Applicants for California licensure must first apply to California Laboratory Field Services and follow the state application process. Information on the requirements and application process may be obtained at the CDPH Laboratory Field Service web site. It is your responsibility to review and complete all licensure requirements of the appropriate state.

          The ASCP Board of Certification examination for Technologist in Cytogenetics has been approved for licensure purposes by the state of California effective October 23, 2009. Applicants for California licensure must first apply to California Laboratory Field Services and follow the state application process. It is your responsibility to review and complete all licensure requirements of the appropriate state.

            International Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist

            Application Fee: $200*

            The ASCP Board of Certification examination for International Medical Technologist, MT(ASCPi) has been approved for licensure purposes by the state of California effective June 1, 2007. Applicants for California licensure must first apply to California Laboratory Field Services and follow the state application process. Information on the requirements and application process may be obtained at the CDPH Laboratory Field Service web site.

            • OPTION 1: Not yet certified: Applying for CA licensure and the MT(ASCPi) exam
            • OPTION 2: Already certified: Obtaining CA licensure after passing the MT(ASCPi) exam

            * International Pricing Policy: Applicants who both (a) obtained medical laboratory education in, AND (b) currently reside in select nations will receive discounted pricing of $95 for all international certification examination categories: International Pricing Policy.

              When the status of your examination application changes (i.e., is determined deficient, ineligible, eligible, etc.) you will receive a notification sent to the email you provided on your application informing you to login to your ASCP account for specific information /details regarding the status of your application. All notifications regarding the status of your application (from submission to examination results) are accessed by logging into your ASCP account.

              To access your ASCP account:

              1. Go to www.ascp.org/login
              2. Login using your ASCP Customer User ID (8 digit number) & Password (for login assistance contact ASCP Customer Service 800.267.2727)
              3. Scroll down and click on the BOC Activities icon
              4. Scroll down and click on the View Application Status link
              5. Click on the Show Details button to view the current status of your application

              All notifications from the ASCP Board of Certification informing an applicant to login to their account to view important information regarding the status of their application are sent via email. It is your responsibility to keep your email address current. Update the email address in your record by logging on to the ASCP website and clicking on “Profiles & Setting”. Failure to keep the ASCP Board of Certification informed of your current email address will result in the non-receipt of important information and notifications regarding your application, scheduling the examination and receipt of scores.
