    Fix to SGR Harms Laboratory Medicine, Patients
    ASCP Generates 3,600 Letters to Hill in 36 Hours

    On Feb. 22, President Obama signed legislation extending the payroll tax cut, continuing unemployment benefits and delaying a scheduled cut in Medicare physician reimbursement rates. The measure, which overall costs about $143 billion, blocks a SGR-imposed cut of 27 percent until the end of 2012. Congress will need to pass additional legislation later this year to prevent what is currently estimated as a 32 percent cuts from occurring in 2013. Read more

    The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) urges its entire membership to contact their representatives in Washington to revise a proposed Congressional deal to use the Medicare Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule to pay for Payroll Tax Cut extension and to prevent a 27 percent cut in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.     HHS Releases New Global Health Strategy
    The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Jan. 5 released its first Global Health Strategy at a forum sponsored by the Kaiser Family Foundation. In a world where the flow of people and goods stretch across the globe, our only chance to keep Americans safe is if the system for preventing, detecting, and containing disease stretches across the globe,” said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “We can no longer separate America’s health from global health.” Read more
