M. Sue Zaleski has a rich history of service with the ASCP, which includes serving on the ASCP Board of Certification, the Leadership Exchange Committee, and one three-year term on the Council of Laboratory Professionals. The co-author of several ASCP Tech samples, she received an ASCP Editor’s Choice Award for an article entitled “Applying Generational Studies to Enhance Laboratory Student Recruit.” In addition, Ms. Zaleski wrote an article, “Cytotechnology on the Move: Then and Now,” for ASCP’s LabMedicine journal. During several Leadership Exchange conferences, she has presented sessions on time management and Lean.

Many societies have recognized her leadership. Among her honor, Ms. Zaleski received the 2005 Cytotechnologist Award for Outstanding Achievement from the American Society of Cytopathology, the 2007 Member Excellence in Management Award from the ASCP, and the 2007 Marion and Nelson Holmquist Award for contributions to cytotechnology from the American Society for Cytotechnology.

Currently, Ms. Zaleski works for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, as a Clinical Pathology Laboratory Manager. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in health occupations education, she earned a master’s degree in policy, planning and leadership studies.

Her colleagues describe Ms. Zaleski as someone who takes the initiative to improve laboratory operations. For example, Dr. Ronald D. Feld, PhD, Associate Professor and Clinical Chemistry Section Director (retired), said, “Sue uses her talents of organization and data-driven decision making to improve the laboratories. She has been a tremendous leader for team building. Sue has a zest for seeing a goal and empowering the laboratory staff to meet and exceed that goal, providing tools and resources as they pursue it.”
