Webcast: Troubleshooting the H & E Stain

Joan Vesey, HT(ASCP)
Laboratory Technical Manager, Richard-Allan Scientific, Kalamazoo, MI

Intended Audience: Pathologists, Residents, Doctoral Scientists, Bench Supervisors, Histotechnologists

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a troubleshooting flow chart to identify quality issues.
  • Identify and correct quality problems and artifacts that are a result of fixation and processing.
  • Understand key steps of the H&E stain for effective troubleshooting.

Often taken for granted, the routine Hematoxylin and Eosin stain remains the most important diagnostic tool in the Histology Laboratory. When quality issues arise, the ability to accurately access and quickly resolve problems is an important skill for the Histotechnologist.

This program will attempt to demystify the troubleshooting process. A flow chart approach is used to quickly identify possible causes and address solutions. Slides featuring common artifacts will be used to help illustrate and improve understanding of these concerns. Key steps involved in producing a high quality H&E, such as fixation and processing, will be reviewed and corrective actions discussed. Examples of the staining characteristics of various stain formulations will help with selection of products and protocols that will help insure the quality and consistency of the finished slide.

ASCP designates this activity for a maximum of 1 CMLE credits. This activity meets CMP and state licensure requirements for laboratory personnel.
