Contemporary Issues in Urologic Pathology

Date: October 27-30, 2008
Location: Palm Springs, CA
Credits: 24.75 CME

Core Competencies: PC, MK, ICS
Intended Audience: Pathologists, Residents, Pathologist Assistants, Urologists

Urologic diseases comprise a significant percentage of daily specimens seen by today’s surgical pathology practice, with tumors in this area representing more than 25 percent of newly diagnosed cancers in the United States. Prostate and bladder biopsies, in particular, are often among the most challenging cases. In addition to a comprehensive review of the field with focus on issues that affect your day-to-day practice, this course will provide expert guidance for enhancing your diagnostic skills.

A nationally recognized faculty, with extensive experience as members of large consultation practices, will share their insights about problems that often lead to the need for diagnostic consultation.

Gain insights from the experts about:

  • The most important microscopic features in reaching an accurate diagnosis
  • How to use ancillary techniques to the best advantage
  • Making a confident diagnosis of prostatic adenocarcinoma with limited tissues
  • The current application of Gleason grading
  • Distinguishing patterns of seminoma from embryonal carcinoma
  • Grading of papillary urothelial tumors
  • Classification of kidney tumors

Each faculty member will direct a one-hour interactive video microscopy session, using glass slides to emphasize critical points in differential diagnosis. Some slides from these sessions will be available for preview as virtual cases. Comprehensive, recently updated glass slide sets and microscopes enable on-site reviews of cases and concepts. You are encouraged to bring your own cases to review with faculty members and for use in a video microscopy session.

You will receive a comprehensive syllabus. An optional pre and post course assessment is included.

Following this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognize and diagnose both common and uncommon pathologic conditions involving urologic organs
  • Select and interpret commonly utilized ancillary tests helpful in the major differential diagnostic problems encountered in urologic pathology material
  • Properly handle tumor bearing specimens from urologic organs including grossing strategies, and prepare diagnostic reports that
  • Recognize areas of controversy in urologic pathology and with the current thinking of experts on how these can be addressed in a practical and pragmatic way in day to day clinical practice.

The ASCP designates these educational activities for a maximum of 24.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activities.
